How can you delegate with accountability?

When a team member understands the direct outcomes (Specific) and the tangible benefits (Relevant) of their efforts, they’re likely to be more motivated and committed. When communicating tasks, visually outline the step-by-step progression towards the goal. Each milestone can be seen as a mini “reward,” making the larger task seem more achievable and stimulating motivation.

Simply handing someone a task to complete drives zero accountability or empowerment. So, you need to ensure that the delegation of tasks is flipped around to a request for ownership. - Work through tasks that make up a project and how/why they are important - Allow people to challenge and question the tasks - Make sure the outcomes are realistic and drive growth and key KPIs - Invite everyone to take ownership of tasks - or suggest pairings/groups to own sections - You may well find that the people who put their hand up for a given task are not those you expect - This approach creates true ownership and engagement - It also gets the best out of the teams - If the key skill lead isn't the task owner, they should be a buddy to the owner

Setting SMART Objectives When delegating with accountability, start by setting SMART objectives. Make sure the tasks or projects you delegate are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This clarity provides a clear roadmap for your team members and makes it easier to assess their progress and results. SMART objectives serve as a foundation for accountability.

Regular check-ins, without micromanaging, allowing them to refine their decision-making and problem-solving skills.

To support your delegation effectively, it's essential to maintain clear and open communication, provide necessary resources and training, and be readily available for questions and guidance. Regularly reviewing progress, offering constructive feedback, and being a problem-solving partner when challenges arise are also key elements of support. Furthermore, acknowledging and motivating the individual's efforts, while respecting their autonomy, creates a positive and productive environment for successful delegation. The brain values predictability and clear patterns. When leaders establish clear expectations during delegation and follow up with consistent feedback, it can create a sense of security and predictability for the individual. Regularly schedule check-ins after delegation. Not only does this provide a structured environment for the team member but it also aligns clarity, thereby enhancing task ownership and accountability.

I have a personal belief that you can delegate responsibility as a leader, and also include clear expectations, but you can’t delegate accountability because ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure that the task is seen through to the intended or an outcome. But there are several other reasons why leaders might not try to delegate accountability such as the pay grade of the other individuals involved (is it fair to hold them accountable for say landing an entire project?), trust and reliability in that some leaders just can’t get out of their own way and delegate effectively. These are just some of my experience based insights.
