A sales resume is written differently than an software developer resume, etc. 4. Second Set of Eyes -- Is the option of a review offered? If so -- take it! A great template can be a game changer and make sure you stand out -- even if you haven't had to write one in 25 years.

If the template has text boxes, multiple fonts, colors, and symbols, don’t use it. Many templates I’ve seen are all flair and lacking substance. Keep it simple. Use one font, 11 point or larger and avoid complex designs.

Sticking to a pre-formatted template will not give you the freedom to personalise your CV. Some of the templates are columnised, and often, the first page looks OK [a bit distracting to read], but then there is nothing in the narrower column on the second page - that is not maximising the use of your available floorspace. Stick to building your document from scratch.

For example, a college sophomore opens a template and uses it to quickly apply for an internship she just saw posted. She fills in the blanks and boom, she’s got a resume with her Education section at the bottom, a “list” of jobs she’s had and the responsibilities, not action statements highlighting transferable skills and keywords, or quantifiable achievements. Both of these options can give you a kickstart to a job search. But, resumes---however, they are created---are not what gets the job. What gets the job is applying to the right jobs.

A template manages how your resume LOOKS. What hiring managers and recruiters care about is CONTENT. The old rule of K.I.S.S. reigns supreme in resume writing. Clean, easy to read entries; no photos/icons/graphs/badges. Your job is a problem you were hired to solve. Use that as your guide. Employer, title, dates, location, and then a bullet point section in STAR format. Situation, Task, Action Result. S-the problem; Task-scope of what you are doing; Action-tools/methodology you used; Result-impact/accomplishments.

The job of a resume is to have you stand out as the top candidate. How can that happen if your resume looks and feels like the other resumes that also use resume builders and templates? Feature your results, your data and your metrics to highlight the value you offer. * What makes you exceptional in your work? * Why are you qualified for this role, compared to other candidates, even internal ones? * Why do employers in your market want to work with you? Answer these questions and you’re well on your way to standing out amongst your competition.
