Dealing with objection, promotion, facilitation, spending, who goes first etc... the list goes on. Be you, be consistent, be flexible, be willing to walk away. Preparing is important and it needs to include thinking about what you need, your interests, your priorities, and more. Be introspective and reflective. Yes, also think about the other person(s) and what you know about their needs, interests, communication style, hot buttons and more. Be cautious by avoiding assumptions and judgments. The one assumption you can make is: they know themselves better than you. When you meet, be open and curious.

Where was this article when I first started out 25 years ago! One additional tip I would give is to make sure you are listening and making your audience feel heard; repeat back what they said to you, even better apply it in a story. Use the "Pause button" before you speak, this allows them to think you heard their pain points and that you have solutions. It's good to be prepared but don't preplan what you are going to say about your company and your product, some of it may have nothing to do with them and when doing this you will lose the connectivity of the conversation. If you can master this in your professional world, your personal world will also improve.

Yes, stories are a creative tool AND a powerful one especially during a negotiation. I once had someone insisting on some terms for a contract. No matter what I asked to learn more, they stuck with their position. Then, I shared a couple of stories of real situations, effectively "showing" them how those terms would impact our day to day business relationship. The stories gave them a "view" from all angles. Then, they offered new terms to meet their needs, my needs and our clients' needs.
