How can you create a unique character design for a sculpting challenge?

One thing that I found helpful is to cross universes. Mixing some classic stereotype but throwing it into another era/time/universe that could be not so easy to found could trigger some nice results.

I use the wildest imagination possible "KIDS". Usually I start sketching with some kids around me to suggest things. Trust me, their imagination brings out the best starting points. from there on you can start thinking technical and mix n match multiple references.

I like to create a visualization board in Photoshop and add references to it. I enjoy mixing different time periods in my concept art. Now with AI tools like Midjourney is even easier to get inspiration for a unique concept and find your subject matter.

Thumbnails, shapes, doodles all is good the more the better and I believe this is the only place where quantity is better than quality. You want ideas and the first drawings will be, for sure, the classic cliche ones. Keep going, throw everything and try everything. Give it a rest and then take a look. Something awesome will come up for sure.

Ensuite, pour bien visualiser ce qu'on veut faire il faut commencer avec du papier et un crayon, même si le dessin n'est pas votre fort. Une fois que vous avez bien en tête le modèle que vous voulez faire, vous pouvez commencer en 3d. Je me répète, mais il faut commencer par des modèles simples.

Link the forms' temperament to the character's psychological profile in advance. An overall simple geometric figure should be visible. If it's Blender go to it, if it's Zbrush jump right into in. If you are old school and feel that you need to start box modeling the base so be it. The most likely that after that kick off you will end up in some of the classic ones; what it's important now is the layout of the foundation so do that where you are more strong, since everything else will be build on top of that.

What we have found works for us, we make high poly sculpt of the object first in blender or zbrush. Then using, create a low poly version using retopology and then bake the normals of high poly version. This way it's easier add details in high poly model and still have usable model for games and XR.

The most fun part of all. Make sure to have a good selection of references for this stage. Here is where all will be coming together so take your time, watch and study the references and enjoy the journey. Again, here is about tools and results, it doesn't matter if you have a million brushes library or are using just one brush. The tool will give you a result if you are in control of that tool is what matters, and that control will give the results that you are looking for.
