The best location to start is the jobs to be done which allows you to have clarity of the journey that your consumers pass through and the frustrations, aspirations they have Conduct consumer interviews and consumer surveys to have better understanding of what kind of style do your consumers appreciate and what kind of functionality they would need more clear understanding of how to use and the usual troubleshooting techniques they use with predecessor appliances , this will give you more clarity on how to formulate the technical documentation and depth level

In my experience, you need identify who your customers are, their knowledge level, and specific needs. Set clear objectives: inform, troubleshoot, or guide. For instance, if your audience consists of novice users, focus on providing introductory explanations, FAQs, and simple diagrams to enhance understanding. Regularly gather customer feedback to refine and optimize the documentation accordingly.

On top of defining the audience and goals, you also need to create a whole process for it. Technical documentation is extremely helpful when maintained but it can be a real burden when not kept up to date. Make sure that you have an owner for the project and that you have an update process at the end of each sprint/cycle. If you have a dedicated person to write the documentation, make sure that this person is aware of the latest release in your product. Don't forget to also update any screenshots when the product gets a facelift.
