With that information in hand, I can research those films and directors and keep them in mind as I help develop the team's shot list.

The biggest factor when it comes to choosing a format or approach for storyboarding is to ask yourself - who are these boards for? If you're a director using them just for yourself, then use whatever format you like, even if it's a napkin. If you're making boards to show investors or need key frames for fundraising or promo efforts, you probably want something more polished. Professionally hand drawn boards can convey both the technical aspects of your vision as well as illustrate the ambience, flow, and mood of a project.

With an updated screenplay in hand, I recently completed a pre-storyboard mode, focused on establishing exterior shots, interior stills, and character notions. One-third are sourced from my personal photograph collection, thousands of location shots. I then used generative AI to create pseudo-photographs of my principle, supporting, and extras cast. Next, I used a combination of my stock, commercial stock, and generative images for most of the interiors and a few additional exteriors. For the next phase, while loving hand-drawn boards, I will use a digital photo-based style. That decision came down to two reasons: I can relay lighting better, and they are easily editable.

I love what digital tools can do to both still and video imaging. The product is essentially an animation. My process is a lot like the studio audio recording technique. Start with clean, evenly lit characters and interiors shots. Tidy them up in Photoshop. Then, use the same digital lighting and other effects that I would use for video in Premiere Pro. Using keyframes, some of these storyboards are easily animated to relay panning and zooming. Sequencing the board, I can relay transition timing for fast cuts, jumps, etc. I could stop here with a cool art film, proceed with an indie film project, or present it as a unique pitch deck.
