I believe in a small space the goal is functionality and creating the feeling of spaciousness. Using light colors with less contrast i/e light floors and light walls will create consistency and flow throughout the home. Repetition of materials also tricks the eye ie/ one type of flooring and one paint color throughout can create a feeling of spaciousness.

Consider using colors on the ceilings that reduce the contrast with the walls to "lift" the overall space. Unless you are also doing white walls, a white ceiling will only show you exactly how small the room is when contrasted with color on the walls.

There is something to be said for spaces that feel smaller, they can be more cozy and intimate. So use of the space is certainly a factor. This is a conversation I have had countless times in my career, I’ve always wondered what our knee-jerk reaction is to a space potentially feeling smaller. I would love for somebody to do a psychological study on that, I find it it very interesting.
