How can you create a sense of purpose during times of uncertainty?

A) Be transparent. Both in terms of the situation on the whole and what is expected out of each of the team members. B) Be Inclusive. when the patch is rough, everyone needs a hand to hold. A team that is coherent during tough times, is the team that would win. C) Be Empathetic. Empathy is the first step to greater trust, at difficult times, trust is highly valuable.

Don’t avoid them ! Be open to listen them ! In my opinion during tough time all the more colleagues or your team mates except you be there with them 1. Be a good listener 2. Allocate few mins of a day to connect with them or call them in their free time and talk to them, hear there concerns or frustration or worries 3. Give your thoughts about the current situation and share your experience if you had in the past and 4. Be honest, Be Open and Boost their morale

I am a firm believer in connecting our work with the bigger purpose. Those who associate their work with a value system, are more likely to thrive in difficult times because they are attached to a bigger purpose. Values are the pillars of our society. If there are no values, society falls apart. Leaders have to find a way to connect their work to some sort of values. For instance, a company is making a product that is going to bring an improvement in people's day to day lives. The product will save time and/or money. It improves efficiency and make people more productive. In short, it makes a difference. A leader must show this societal impact/value to the team in order to generate the drive and passion.

Any blank space you leave in your communication about the ongoing situation will only allow speculation and will divert the narrative from where you want it to be, which is the informed perspective, into the uninformed theories that will only increase the strain on your teams. Take every opportunity to give the informed perspective, debunk any false narratives and get the people onto the same path.

To create a sense of purpose during times of uncertainty, help others to identify the things they can control. Brainstorm with them what those might be and give them the support to build their confidence. All of this requires a commitment to empathy, active listening skills, and proactive communication.

Uncertainty is part and parcel of todays world. There are many factors which create these scenarios. Developing Agile mindset is the only way of life to overcome these scenarios. Agile mindset is set of principles and values that guide how to approach complex and uncertain situations effectively. It is based on the delivering value on a incremental basis collaborating with others by embracing change while looking for the feedback. By adopting to the agile mindset one can create sense of purpose that is flexible , realistic and meaningful. Steps : 1) Define vision 2) Break them to smaller chunks 3) Execute and get the feedback 4) Learn from the execution Hope these steps will help.

Working group knows best the in and out of business operations. They are the bread and butter on how process works, customers are happy and suppliers pay on time. It is therefore important to include the team in critical decision-making to ensure all aspects are considered and empower them to take ownership and accountability of the quality of work delivered.

If the team understand the impact of their actions they will often give very insightful feedback on solutions and ways forward. It is critical at this point that the individuals who bring these solutions are recognised for their contributions to higher management and that leaders never take credit for where it is not earned. Help your team to reflect on why they chose to back your organisation in the first place. What motivated them and does that motivation still stand? Align the organisation's values with the team's understanding of what those values mean to them. A useful pre-activity will be to pair your teammates up, giving them a safe environment to 'complain' about the organisation. After getting this off their chest, validate their concerns by asking them how they see the org's values show up in their daily work. It could be an actual scenario or an ideal scenario in their minds. This will hopefully trigger a thought process that will lead them to revisiting their motivations to join your organisation in the first place.

In times of uncertainty there is confusion, often lack of clarity on what success might look like and sometimes impact to the vision and path of the team. While sharing a north star can help give something for everyone to anchor around - what if the vision isn't clear? For example during the pandemic -- this completely changed some companies business models. When this happens smaller short term goals and wins with clear transparent communication along the way is a great way to keep your team fully engaged.

Uncertain times are the most important ones when ensuring that there is a vision set for the organization, and the entire team is aligned with it. Also, it is important for a leader to set specific goals for each team member so that each team member is very clear in what is expected of him/her, and how their contribution is going to help the organization achieve the vision. In the same manner, this is the right time for a leader to have an open conversation with their team members whether the work they are doing is helpful in achieving their aspirations. If the goals and the aspirations align well, then uncertain times can be easily navigated.

I have to disagree with this component of the article. I would tread lightly on providing blanket statements and more sugarcoated feedback in order to try and boost morale. It’ll come off as fake and then I’ll add onto the stress, anxiety of uncertainty because now people don’t know what you’re saying is true versus what you’re saying is being manipulative.

Managers should always provide constructive feedback and recognition to their employees. This is critical during times of uncertainty. Make sure your employees understand the organizations mission, goals and objectives and provide feedback to each employee by giving recognition to those that excel at meeting them and noting areas for improvement.

I believe you should always be giving feedback and recognition this should not have anything to do with uncertain times -- this should be a staple for how you lead. Helping your team understand their value, and regularly helping to guide them, give feedback as well as listen and learn from them -- this should be an ongoing process you carry out no matter is business is good or bad, or if times are uncertain or stable.

The downside of collecting feedback can be challenging due to factors like increased stress, limited bandwidth, fear of repercussions, uncertainty about solutions, and communication barriers. leaders must approach feedback collection with sensitivity and empathy during times of uncertainty. Learning new skills motivates individuals. It also builds confidence and improves self esteem. Leaders should encourage and support their teams. Organizations benefit from efficient and productive teams.

Prepare for brighter days as you should be operating as though you are living your dream reality to attract the energy you need to as you turn that into your current reality. About this time last year, when my company was going through a hiring freeze, we were refining and creating templates for current and future employees. A few months later, those templates came in handy. We were back in our typical work schedule with tighter deadlines as we onboarded new clients and scaled growth with existing ones.

If they cannot afford paid learning, LinkedIn and other platforms offer free online courses and certifications. Also, brushing up on a tactile skill like a hobby or setting up an alternative income stream are useful ways to stay motivated.

I would change the question to; "How can you maintain a sense of purpose during times of uncertainty"? We need to acknowledge that "uncertainty" is a certainty in life. First, we should know that this “uncertainty” will pass. Secondly, we must be kind to ourselves. We can only focus on what we can control, we must accept there are things out of our control, and we will have to make decisions without all the time of information we may have liked. Anchoring ourselves back to what is important, what is our North Star, and acting on the things we can control can ease the anxiety that comes with “uncertainty”. Moreover, it will teach us that we can weather the storms life throws us into like another Odysseus, without losing sight of Ithaca.

During uncertain times, it is important for a leader to continue to celebrate small and/or big wins. This helps in keeping the morale of the team high in both professional and personal front. Also, this helps in bringing the team mates close so that exchange of information and ideas can happen seamlessly.

Would you not want to have already "built" a positive and supportive culture? Why wait until times are uncertain? This should be a fundamental part of a team, organization, company to drive success.

I like to think of my role as being responsible for the team and bringing out the best of each team member. One key part of this is how I react when things go wrong, mistakes are made or the best plans fail. By supporting the team and individuals to learn from failure will encourage innovation and build a sense of psycological safety. I have found that open and honest feedback and learning from the past build a real sense of trust within a team.

Sometimes as leaders we need to step back and get to know our team ; not just their strengths and weaknesses. It is important to have clear communication and transparency, but it is important to be gentle with people and yourself. Uncertainty is a given because change is constant. People stay not mainly for the money but because or great leaders. After all we are only human and remembering what motivates us is not rocket science. Nothing much new under the sun. Meet people where they are and their opinions and voice matters.

It is important to acknowledge that uncertainty is okay, even normal. The mere presence of uncertainty can feel disruptive or even scary, but a leader needs to call it out, acknowledge it, and not let it be the 'monster under the bed.' If you bring it out into the light and make sure everyone knows that it is a known unknown, it is easier for the whole team to be at ease. Leaders should also remind their teams that when there is high uncertainty, their goals and aims need to be consider hypotheses, or prototypes, that will be tested and modified as information becomes more certain and as circumstances change. Goals and aims which are too rigid will be shown to have feet of clay.

In times of uncertainty, it is wise to model vulnerability and share how you're navigating this time as a leader. This can set up a positive culture of team sharing without any toxic positivity. It's not realistic to be motivated all the time as a leader. Team members need to see that to feel safe and assured that their own negative feelings are normal.

Sense of purpose is the basis of effective work. The only addition is times of uncertainty. More of what was being done earlier, that's all. If one had to add onto it, than transparency of the real situation, channeling their energies and ensuring focus remains on track, creating robust learning experiences and showing them what the future can hold for them if they persevere, removing the uncertainty by providing potential options available to them and letting them work on possible solutions, providing clear direction towards a way out etc.
