You can pick players curiousity with this elements AND build a strong narrative, specially with todays technology. Remember to be creative and misterious while you deliver the narrative in your game

In my game with dungeon levels, I wanted to add a sence of depth and uncertainty. The environment was already dark and the game was for mobile so i couldn't reduce the light in the scene, it would make the game unplayable, so I added empty tunnels and closed them with gates. This made the tunnels visible, adding depth and by not allowing access to this area it created mystery. Your world doesn't always need to be real, it can be a facade.

A Game that did this very well was Metal Gear Solid (PS1) At one point you had to check the back of the game box to get a frequency code, forcing you to search beyond the Game. At another point the game Made you change controller inputs (from P1 to P2) so you could defeat a boss. Very creative ways (back in 1998) to use Meta Story Telling techniques
