How can you create a project-based learning environment that celebrates diversity?

All learning needs to be meaningful, relatable, and students need to use their learning to be agents of change. Before wanting to change the world, start with your community and microcosmos. Students will be able to experience an immediate impact. In my year group, students went to the home for elderly people to perform for them and make cakes with them. This intergenerational connection was beneficial both for our younger students, who learned new skills from elders, and for the elderly who enjoyed teaching our students and listening to them perform. Research has shown that both older adults and young people benefit from intergenerational relationships. These interactions promote mental and emotional wellness and a sense of purpose.

I would like to add one more step: assist the students in wrapping up the project by creating a lesson-learned file so that they could learn and grow from their own experiences.

Esta é uma etapa fundamental porque os alunos far?o, no percurso do processo de pesquisa colaborativa, o exercício real de sociabilizar em um grupo. Muitas vezes os alunos rejeitam ou temem, mesmo que inconscientemente, o exercício de promover a pluralidade e a diversidade em sala de aula. I completely agree and can relate to this as a student who’s worked on projects in a diverse team. Collaboration is great, it promotes inclusion and active participation. A great opportunity to share ideas and learn from people of different professional backgrounds.

I’ve found that educators must be comfortable with productive struggle to incorporate diverse resources. Not every resource is the top way a student learn. Nevertheless, educators should create space for resources that are engaging and relevant to student learning.

Drawing from my perspective as a South African teacher: Engage students with novels and folktales by South African authors. Utilize documentaries and films produced by local filmmakers. Explore museums for historical artifacts and traditional art. Facilitate insightful guest speaker sessions representing different communities, providing firsthand stories and insights. Collaborate with community leaders to create a personal touch. Incorporate words and phrases from our various languages relevant to the activity. Integrate virtual tours to immerse students in our cultural sites and landmarks. Complement this with hands-on projects, allowing students to create artifacts inspired by our diverse cultures.

Siempre es recurrente el uso de muchos recursos. Pero como se comenta en este caso, lo importante es que los recursos sean auténticos. Que los estudiantes utilicen fuentes reales para configurar su proyecto y aprender. Si bien es cierto, que en edades inferiores no podemos utilizar fuentes primarias por la dificultad que entra?an. A pesar de ello, somos los docentes quienes debemos de encargarnos de crear fuentes secundarias similares a las reales para que los alumnos tengan la percepción de que están trabajando con las fuentes directas y aprendan el valor de extraer los aprendizajes de recursos auténticos y variados que sean de utilidad para todos y se complementen entre sí.

That said, self-assessment is also crucial in this type of project-based learning. Teaching students the process of self-evaluation enables them to become independent life-long learners who can not only identify and celebrate their uniqueness but also recognize their areas for further growth and development.

Providing feedback and assessments is a fundamental aspect of personal, professional, and organizational growth. It creates a culture of continuous improvement, fosters motivation, and contributes to the individuals overall success. When I taught in an elementary school, I was often tasked with developing both formative and summative assessments for students. Formative assessments helped build my understanding of each students' progress through their learning adventure. This allowed me to understand where each student excelled and maybe even struggled. I often took this information and developed more individualized lessons to help prepare them for their summative assessment. Now that I train adults, I still use this method!

That is why I advocate for more time spent developing ‘pupil voice’ skills. It’s one of the key differences I witnessed between children from schools situated in a low-income/working class towns compared to a middle class affluent school children. Consistently sharing and explaining their project outcomes develops their presentation skills and communication skills significantly. In my opinion this is nowhere near done enough in schools situated in specific demographics (can’t put my finger on why that is exactly). Schools must create this environment regularly because the benefits outweigh even academic achievements I feel. The skills young students hone when discussing their findings for example allows for huge growth in their mindset.

Attend a cultural event together in which students have never been part of. Then the students wrote about their experiences in the college paper.

The students should be encouraged to share their projects. This will boost their confidence and the others will be inspired and they can learn from each other as peer learning is the best form of learning. Their learning will be diversified.

Additionally, motivation and excessive demands are closely related. For example, I teach concepts for successful inter- and transcultural music lessons. In this way, students can better understand other perspectives and find new ideas for working with young people. A project-based learning environment should spark an enthusiasm for diversity, i.e. becoming curious and exploring the world together. Teachers can reflect on their own educational biography and help students from families without academic experience to develop their potential and see themselves as responsible and capable of acting.

??I'd consider learners of different styles collaborating for a project. The most prominent Learning model is VARK model. VARK stands for Visual, Auditory, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. To find solutions for climatic degradation could be considered as one of the project based learnings whereby in a single group VARK learners are present.

Creating inclusive projects that resonate with and connect students. Form groups deliberately, mixing different backgrounds to learn from each other. Encourage discussions and don't shy away from biases. They are inherent in our lives, homes, and schools; helping children understand them is the first step to disassembling them. In regard to neurodiversity and celebrating this, I want to add supporting the way an individual learns, adaptive seating, moving as needed, fidget toys, FM listening devices to isolate teachers voice and so many other tools can be used to allow the learner to feel included and connected.

Looking at the 7 sense not just 5. Proprioception and vestibular.......how children move through the environment. How do we include neurodiverse children into our environmental setting. How do we include physically diverse children to include the whole child.

One aspect that I found missing in many projects that adopt diversity is addressing why we are diversed and how we are diversed as humans. Taboos like relgious beliefs, poliltical opinions, discrimnation, and bias need to be the starting point to have a geniune sense of diversity among learners.

Students need to become inspired to become lifelong intrinsic learners. They should be encouraged to delve into things they want to know more about and taught to use the tools at hand for research and then hands on learning. They should be motivated to have a quest for knowledge of all things.
