How can you create a positive work environment during conflict?

Having a positive work environment is very important as we happen to spend more than 8 hours in office and with colleagues. Communicate well and resolve conflicts on time. Its also important to have a good team to collaborate and work well. A good team helps you relax and share the burdens and work loads. Everyone is looking for work life balance so we should avoid blaming, judging, having small talks about others and avoid creating a toxic work environment. As the famous saying goes people don't leave the jobs or buildings they leave their bosses and office environment to find a better and peaceful place.

To create a positive work environment during conflict, encourage open communication, foster a culture of respect and understanding, provide conflict resolution training, address issues promptly, and promote collaboration to find mutually beneficial solutions.

Best ways are: 1. none I know there are many but there isn't any definitive one. The best way is to first calm the team and then begin a dialogue between the conflicting parties where each of them gets fair opportunity to speak for 10 seconds for total of 30 seconds. Done this and within 25 seconds most of them realise their mistakes and are ready for deep dive to solve the root causes.

Conflict is inevitable and natural, therefore, it would be wise to understand the reasons of conflict and then try to find ways to resolve it. While identifying the source it is important to keep the person and problem separate. This helps in addressing the situation better. Listening to the person actively will help you identify conflict and build interpersonal skills. While listening to the person, it is important to be non judgmental, non biases and not jump to conclusions and assumptions. Only then will you be able to understand the root cause of conflict.

Needs - Recognizing that everyone harbors distinct needs at all times is crucial. Failure to comprehend these needs can lead to frustration and anger. Asking - Once the needs are clear, constructive communication involves the art of asking. Resolving conflicts often hinges on addressing these needs instead of dwelling on negative emotions about others.

In my experience, using terms, like "If I am understanding you.." or " I see why this is worrysome and ......" are the best ways to communicate when responding rather than going on the offensive and on the attack.

One must understand the emotions of others involved in the conflict as well and accordingly acknowledge their feelings and demonstrate empathy. Another way could be by framing your thoughts using "I" statements to express your feelings and avoiding blame or accusations. This would help in conveying your perspective without making others defensive.

I have found using The Process Communication Model (PCM) to be a helpful tool for communicating during conflict. PCM offers a roadmap for respectful conflict resolution. Recognizing six distinct personality types, it tailors communication strategies for each: clarity for Thinkers, empathy for Harmonizers, novelty for Rebels, visuals for Imaginers, energy for Promoters, and structure for Persisters. By adapting communication to these preferences, PCM facilitates understanding, empathy, and common ground. It empowers individuals to navigate conflicts constructively, fostering understanding and cooperation in relationships and workplaces. It has been invaluable for me.

Finding common ground at work can be challenging. at some point you must make a decision. In hierarchical setups, decisions often rest with seniors. For example, if my direct reportee wants to do something one way, and I think it's a bad idea, we discuss it. we will go back and forth and explain whys I would often say, You know, I disagree, but let's go with your idea. I trust you as you're closer to what's really happening, and I'll support the decision. I would not give second -guessing, I'm not gonna be saying I told you but I'm gonna try actively to help make sure it works. This way, we can create a positive work environment by working together, considering different opinions, and committing to supporting the decisions made.

In my opinion, the biggest reason for a conflict in most cases is ego. Once we recognise the ego play, it will be easier to create a positive work environment. The way it can be handled is by stepping back for a bit and re-access the entire situation, then invite the other party and listen to them. Once the other side case is laid put across your point of view as objectively as possible.
