Shell size and tuning can change your drum sound drastically as well as various ways of dampening the heads or in the case of toms/kick, sometimes taking the resonate heads off entirely in some situations. Example: going for 70’s fat dry sound, tune your snare till it’s just finger tight, then add an extra turn or two on the lugs, toss a big fat snare dampener on it, or a few gels or even a wallet in a pinch. Adjust tightness of the snares to match the song feel and how “loose” you want the snare to sound.

You can process/mix drum tracks effectively in so many different ways. I always consider first, where do they sit in context of the song and how much space do the fill up? Is their a “characteristic” drum sound for the genre/era/etc. of music I’m mixing? Secondly, is there a focus on the kick or snare, or hi-hats… etc? Example: Need the toms to pop during a breakdown? Consider gating them on their individual tracks so you can bring them up in the mix without too much bleed. You can still get a sense of the room in your overhead mics then without blasting the volume on cymbals /full kit so much by having to really turn them up.

If you have access, you can download samples of drums sounds legally, and you can use them to program a drum kit in, if you don't have the space or drum kit yourself. I won't give my exact procedure, but using drum sounds this way has been a game changer for me personally.

If you are in a smaller space, putting a set of triggers on the drums is a great way to track an extra set of transients without having as much bleed as mics. If the drums sound too boxy in your space, you can then replace or layer drum samples as needed while still having the actual cymbals you tracked. While you can do this by just detecting transients from the micd tracks, i find the triggers to often times be a cleaner/faster method. This is a way to still have a “natural” drum sound while adding/replacing drums. Just eq your overheads appropriately to fit.
