How can you create a more accurate data model?

Data model is the blue print of the entire system that is going to be built to feed data to it. Be it an operational system or an analytical system. An accurate data model is the one that captures all the data that are expected to be captured and facilitate the necessary provisions for future needs of the business. Hence, this requires a good level of understanding the historical, current and future state of the underlying business. A data modeler has to be half DBA and half MBA to conceptualize, visualize and create an accurate data model.

In my opinion, some strategies can help, such as: Start by fully understanding the business objectives and requirements, Perform data profiling and exploration on available data sources, Cleanse and pre-process the data to ensure its quality and consistency, Design new features or transform existing ones to capture relevant patterns and relationships in data, Choose the most appropriate modeling techniques based on the nature of the problem, data characteristics, and desired outcomes, Validate data model accuracy using evaluation metrics and appropriate validation techniques and Continuously refine the model based on stakeholder feedback, new data insights, and changing business requirements.

In my view, understanding the requirements is a very crucial stage which impacts the overall correctness of a data model. While gathering requirements, I usually prefer below methodologies. 1. Identifying Stakeholders- Users/Personas 2. Sessions with Business/Stakeholders 3. Documenting Current State 4. Defining Business Objectives/Reporting Needs 5. Identifying Data Sources 6. Prioritizing Requirements 7. Documenting Requirements

The most important step is to understand the business dataflow first--> then the data structure--> then recursive nature of the data. Then create the conceptual model Finalize the technology Revisit the conceptual model, Finalize, create the physical model.

Start by thoroughly understanding the requirements. Collaborate closely with stakeholders to gather detailed insights into the data sources, business processes, and desired outcomes. Next, conduct comprehensive data profiling and analysis to identify inconsistencies, errors, or missing values in the data. Cleanse and preprocess the data to ensure its quality and integrity. Utilize techniques such as data normalization, denormalization, and entity relationship modeling to design a robust and efficient data model that represents the underlying business processes and relationships. Validate the data model with stakeholders through iterative reviews, incorporating any necessary refinements. Finally, document the data model thoroughly
