There is no "right" way to learn Marketing or anything for that matter. Make it easier for yourself to learn about Marketing by assessing your strengths and interests. Look for peers who are a few steps ahead of you to find inspiration and support. Ultimately, you'll have an easier time learning about topics that you're interested in. For me, that was tech and software so I naturally gravitated toward marketing automation software.
I agree. Now the big question you might ask is, well how do I know what I’m even good at? In my experience, taking on various roles as a marketer is the best and fastest way to learn what’s possible, what you love, what’s meh, and what you loathe. (Yes, you will, in fact, loathe some aspects of marketing. This is a good thing; it provides clarity down the line.) Once you figure out what you love and are good at, double down on that and use that as a guiding light to select which jobs you take on in the future. The more you do what you love within marketing, the easier it is to craft a career path that is in true alignment with your vision for your life.
The next step is to explore the marketing landscape and learn about the different roles, functions, and trends that exist in the field. You can do this by researching online, reading industry publications, attending webinars and events, joining professional associations and networks, and talking to other marketers. This will help you discover the various paths and opportunities that are available for marketers, and how they match with your strengths and interests. You can also identify the gaps and challenges that you may face, and how to overcome them.
There are specialist roles or more generalist roles. In house, or freelance / agency. So the question becomes do you want to dig in deep to one particular project, or get broad access to a lot. There is such a difference in pace working in house and agency, even if the principles of the work are the same.
A quick word of caution; The marketing field is vast, and it’s easy to get lost in the weeds. Keep your research phase to a minimum, focusing just on getting a high-level understanding of what’s possible. Pay attention to what captures your attention, and use that as a jump off point to find entry level work that will then give you a practical understanding of that field.
The third step is to set your marketing goals and milestones, based on your assessment and exploration. You can start by defining your short-term and long-term goals, such as gaining a certain skill, certification, or experience, landing a specific job or promotion, or launching a project or campaign. Then, you can break down your goals into smaller and measurable milestones, such as completing a course, applying for a position, or reaching a target audience. You can also assign a timeline and a budget for each milestone, and track your progress and results.
The fourth step is to seek feedback and mentorship from others who can support and guide you along your marketing career path. You can ask for feedback from your managers, colleagues, clients, or peers, to learn about your strengths and weaknesses, and how to improve your performance and outcomes. You can also seek mentorship from experienced and successful marketers, who can offer you advice, insights, and opportunities, and help you grow your network and reputation. You can find mentors through your existing contacts, online platforms, or professional organizations.
It's cool to ask your coworkers for feedback but keep in mind that they might be holding back some things due to your existing relationship. That's why it's important to seek input and mentorship from outside of your team or outside the company.
The fifth step is to update your marketing portfolio and resume, to showcase your skills, achievements, and potential as a marketer. Your marketing portfolio should include samples of your work, such as campaigns, content, designs, or analytics, that demonstrate your creativity, strategy, and impact. Your resume should highlight your education, qualifications, and experience, as well as your accomplishments and results, using relevant keywords and metrics. You should also optimize your online presence, such as your website, blog, or social media profiles, to reflect your personal brand and value proposition.
The final step is to keep learning and adapting to the changing needs and demands of the marketing field. You can do this by staying updated on the latest trends, tools, and best practices, and applying them to your work. You can also pursue continuous learning opportunities, such as courses, workshops, certifications, or degrees, that can enhance your knowledge and skills, and open new doors for you. Consistent and disciplined: As a marketer, you have to be consistent in your marketing activities by being proactive with customers and clients you are dealing with to maintain and retain them for profitability. Again, you must be personally disciplined in your marketing activities to serve your clients satisfactorily for your product or service to benefit the public. Unethical and illegal: To derive your career path, you must not engage in unethical and illegal activities of marketing a product or service that harms to health of the people in the society because it can destroy the goodwill of your company brands and your personality.
