How can you create an inclusive workplace that celebrates all holidays and traditions?

I firmly believe that creating an inclusive workplace celebrating all holidays starts with understanding your team. Recognizing the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and values is crucial. Tools like surveys and informal conversations reveal holiday preferences and traditions. Actively seeking input on how individuals wish to be recognized during these times empowers leaders to tailor initiatives, avoiding assumptions or insensitive comments. This knowledge fosters an environment where everyone feels valued, irrespective of their cultural or religious affiliations.

1) Initiating dialogues with as many people, finding out their cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and values can be a first step. 2) Create a DEI interest group/community. People do enjoy contributing, and they would appreciate being offered seats at the table (and likely would take it up if they do have the bandwidth to do so). If not, allow them to recommend their seat to others, or someone to represent their voice and views. 3) Create a celebrations calendar. Even if some practices don't make it to the local/national public holiday calendar, knowing when people hold celebrations can mean a lot to them. This can create opportunities for celebrations, and HR can offer them priority when it comes to taking leave for family celebrations.

I would also consider establishing or support Employee Resource Groups focused on different cultural or religious backgrounds. These groups can help organize events, provide support, and offer insights on creating an inclusive environment.

1. Training Programs. Implement diversity and inclusion training to raise awareness and enhance understanding of different cultures. 2. Open Communication.Encourage open dialogue about cultural differences, fostering an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their backgrounds. 3. Diverse Leadership. Promote diversity in leadership roles to reflect a variety of perspectives and experiences. 4. Policy Review.Regularly review and update policies to ensure they support a culturally inclusive environment, addressing any biases or gaps. 5. Employee Resource Groups. Establish employee resource groups focused on different cultures to provide a platform for sharing insights and building a sense of community.

Some of the examples that I've implemented are establishing a group celebrating cultural diversity with events and insights, encouraging team discussions to share holiday traditions and conducting regular surveys for ongoing improvement based on employee input. Additionally, we have conducted workshops educating employees on diverse cultural and religious practices and cultures and maintaining a company calendar with major and cultural celebrations goes a long way. At times, we've hosted multicultural fair for food, displays, and presentations.

Celebrate Cultural Events.Recognize and celebrate various cultural events and holidays to promote inclusivity. 8. Language Inclusivity:Be mindful of language use, avoiding terms that may be culturally insensitive and promoting a language-inclusive environment. 9. Flexible Work Policies. Implement flexible work policies that accommodate diverse cultural practices and holidays. 10. Cultural Competency Assessments Conduct assessments to measure employees' cultural competency and tailor training programs accordingly.

I've always enjoyed the idea of a community board at work, where everyone gets to post their own holiday celebration ideas and pictures. This allows the entire team to join in everyone's celebrations together and learn about each other's cultural experiences and differences. It brings an automatic sense of community and is a great bonding experience.

Flexibility and understanding that not everyone celebrates at the same time or in the same way are keys to making a work environment friendly to everyone feeling safe and open to request alternate holiday accommodations if they would like them. Honoring another person's culture, faith, or personal preference when it comes to holidays is a sign of respect as a team member and a leader. There is not a rule book somewhere that states we all have to do it the same way.

Cultural humility is a crucial element in creating a workplace that celebrates everyone inclusively. It involves a willingness to learn and grow from others' perspectives, acknowledging one's own cultural biases, and approaching cultural differences with an open mind and heart. One of the easiest ways to celebrate jointly, as a team, is to schedule a celebration intentionally on a day that is absolutely NOT any one specific holiday. This allows no individual culture to feel singled out as the best nor shut out as the least. Then solicit ideas from your team! How do they want to celebrate? Can everyone incorporate one of their favorite holiday traditions into a team event? As a leader, anything you can do to personalize it for each member of your team makes it that much more special. Even if it is just a small note with you acknowledging their personal holiday, preference, or beliefs, taking that extra step to show that you listened and paid attention has considerable meaning.

A great way to get feedback from Employees is to create an Inclusion Committee that is dedicated to diverse and inclusive celebrations. They can provide a calendar of events but also advise on how to celebrate in-person and virtually. This committee can also gather feedback and propose initiatives.

Who doesn't love a good poll?! After all is said and done, send out a quick and anonymous set of questions - and make sure to leave one open for general comments - to engage your team's opinions about what worked and what didn't work. They will definitely have thoughts! If your team is large, maybe for the next year you can create a committee to help with the planning since sometimes significant holidays don't always fall at the same time of the year. It's all about working together and getting better from what you learn.

This joy will pass across the global workplace as an inclusion culture. Eventually, people follow what trendy in the company!

Never stop learning because there is always more to know. There will be people coming and going from your team, so it is important to ensure that everyone gets the same level of consideration regarding cultural involvement. Leadership cannot simply rest on what they know. The landscape of cultural competency is ever-evolving. Seek out ways to expand your knowledge base and be creative about getting to know your team's needs better while respecting their cultural needs.

Creating an inclusive workplace requires awareness. Provide learning portals for diverse groups to understand cultures and religions. Only with an understanding of diverse cultures can you acknowledge and respect differences, and comprehend the significance of various festivals, holidays, and preferences. Many organizations create global holiday calendars to build awareness and aid project planning. Include local festivals and religious observances in projects, as people may take leaves during these periods. Mentally prepare the organization for the possibility that, during certain festivals, employees may take time off, which is acceptable. I am 100% on board with creating an inclusive space so that everyone feels safe and celebrated - and I believe in having policies and benefits that enable everyone to mark whatever occasions are important to them but I also think it is a good idea to remember that organisations probably can’t go all out for every single festival and day of remembrance that exists on the calendar! I favour creating a calendar of events every year and being really clear about which are strategically important ones to will drive forward your diversity and inclusion aims. Invest time, energy and money in those first. People can still take time off, have smaller events or share blogs/stories about other things but resources can be directed in an organised way.

Integrity is an important component in this conversation around embracing the festive and holiday period. People who are excluded all year round when it comes to opportunities, promotions and spaces are not going to want to celebrate and share these key dates. Is your organisational culture one that is psychologically safe so people feel empowered to share their true authentic selves and extend these key dates with their team, department and organisation. Finally celebrate even if there is an absence of what you are celebrating in your organisation. For example, if you have no black employees in your organisation don’t let that stop you from celebrating BHM. To be inclusive means to include what may not currently be present.

I've learned that creating an inclusive workplace involves more than understanding cultural backgrounds. Additionally, providing educational resources on cultural competence empowers the team, and regular feedback ensures genuine inclusivity. It's an ongoing commitment to understanding and embracing diverse perspectives that makes a workplace truly inclusive.

Before finalizing the holiday calendar, do the following: 1. Allow every employee to fill in their festival holidays. You can set an upper limit for the total number of holidays 2. Based on the preferences, design a holiday plan that reflects different options 3. Before the start of a month, ask employees to pick their holiday for the month 4. Over the years, use data analysis to find patterns by region, religion, ethnicity, etc to improve this process.
