How can you create an inclusive training space?

???Personal Experience: In my L&D career, I've found that understanding my audience is the foundation for designing effective training programs. By using various methods to gather information, I can tailor my training to meet participants' needs and expectations, resulting in improved engagement, satisfaction, and learning outcomes.

For me understanding my audience, is more than just the VAK. It is about their preparedness for the workshop. Not everyone in the workshop are there to learn. Understanding their motivation and their perspective is key. In my TTT, to make it fun and easy to remember, I identify 4 learner persona; The antagonist, The reluctant, The party goer & The explorer. As adults, we learn for a purpose. When people feel misunderstood n perceive the workshop as a way to 'put them in place', they become The antagonist. A key mantra in my TTT is "We are here for the learners". This means meeting the learners where they are at.

Knowing your participants is the key aspect of the Training Session. This way you understand the demographics involved, years of experience they are having, grouping them into different generations and many more. This gives a exact purview what you shall talk in the session and derive FAQs.

The best way for people to feel "seen" in a workshop or training, especially if it's with a large group, is to use their name. Not good with remembering names? Here's one quick trick: After being introduced, repeat the person's name back to them. For example, if they say, "Hi, I'm Alex," you can respond with, "Nice to meet you, Alex." This repetition can help reinforce the name in your memory.

I agree with this, choice of words is an important goal of the Trainer/Facilitator. Not fancy but a sweet and simple language a heart of any training session. At start of the session of we can ask participants their choice of language indirectly connect them with you. They feel respected and involved from start.

Please stop referring as whole to a room full of individuals as 'guys' I personally shut down because being in a male dominant field I assume I'm being excluded purposely. Y'all, or you all is much friendlier.

In most situation, people unconsciously judge if the environment is inclusive or not, is in the response they get. In my part of the world, there's a tendency for people to use sarcasm as a form of joke or teasing. Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates sarcasm. So as a trainer/ learning facilitator, it is important for us to be mindful in our jokes and teases. Statement such as "Even my grandma knows that" or "I am surprised you think that way, it is so unbecoming".

In my experience as a Facilitator content and method of delivery plays a very important role. While content sets a logical flow of the overall session but also it interacts with the participants. Ensure your content of the training is relevant and crisp at deck. Try to add more case studies, examples and plays. This will give you more engagement from participants. Participants learn more when they practice so try being provider of opportunities to practice them the concepts. Try to design the evaluation plan for the topic at the implementation phase. This will be the additional checkpoint to get the effectiveness evaluation of the session. Most important, Learning Objectives are everything of your topic stick to that. Happy Learning

Quizzes really helpful for each topics. From that, we will know whether the participants understand or not the content of the training.

Participation and collaboration are key; the very thing we are trying to avoid in training spaces is any one person feeling like they aren't involved or that they are being excluded. It's important to pay attention to any learning preferences and to also set very clear guidelines as to what is expected from each and every session.

For Trainer success of the Training session shall always be how much the participants were encouraging and collaborating within the session. This can be achieved through various activities conducted at particular time within the session. Try to link the activities with the concepts. Ask questions and give feedback this giver additional confidence whether participants are attentive enough during the session. Ground rules at start establish the discipline of the Training session. For diverting questions keep parking space always active on board.

Work to create a safe space, but please do not make participation a requirement. Give them the opportunity to do it in their time.

For me, a key methodology to create an inclusive workshop is to begin the day by having a 'class agreement'. Some of us may know this as 'rules of engagement'. It is basically a set of guidelines everyone use as a way to conduct themselves in class. Simple things such as Be present, Timeliness, Confidentiality (this is crucial), Have fun, Ask questions no matter how small is it goes into my class agreement.

Always ask the participants with open ended questions so that more suggestions and answers can be given by them. With more answers, more participants will involve.

Challenging and getting answers from the participants is the difficult task. Support them when they talk. No answer is wrong is the theory here. Also, give the feedback on the thoughts. Let participant talk more in to the session. Keep in mind no one likes bla bla Teacher, we are having adults in the session.

Be honest with yourself and do not take feedback personally. Take it as an exchange of information like customer data. Analyze it and determine if/when/how to implement it, and what is the expected result. Never assume your way is the only way.
