How can you create flexible software solutions as an IT consultant?

"Flexible" is a double-edged sword. Jell-O is flexible, but it's pretty difficult to use it to build stable structures. When I hear a client ask for flexibility, I generally work to help them understand that flexibility is expensive, and that rigidity (that is, enforcement of some sort of business rules) is where most of the value of systems live. Then, it's a matter of understanding where the flexibility needs to be; i.e. "axes" of flexibility. Usually flexibility is about making space for human decisions. Look for the human decision component.

Choose the right techincal stacks before you start the project. Normally, we would choose popular stacks such as Java, Nodejs, Javascript. That's the way we make it flexible.

For me the most important three factors are Project Requirements: Start by understanding the specific requirements of your project. Different types of software may require different technology stacks. Consider whether you need specific features, such as real-time capabilities, offline access, or data processing. Budget and Timeline: Some technologies may be costlier to implement or may take longer to develop with. Weigh the trade-offs between time-to-market and long-term maintenance costs. Team Expertise: Choosing a stack that aligns with their knowledge can save time and resources. However, it's also an opportunity to introduce new technologies, so consider whether your team can acquire new skills during the project.

It is easy and challenging at the same time :) - Consider your talent pool to limit needed education efforts. - Bring your Team leads to the table because they have a better knowledge of their team's strong sides & limitations. - Use the wisdom of your company's "Technology board" and ask them to review your tech stack critically. Organize a cross-tech expert board if you have none in your company. - Check the tech stack against the HR database ;)

Agile isn't really a one size fits all solution. Defining what is needed and when is needed, Cost predictability versus iterative prototyping are considerations which need to be weighed before forming an opinion around development methodology.

In my experience maximum flexibility comes from reducing coupling as much as possible. There are many technologies for doing so. One common model for large numbers of similar task is to have an automatically scale set of relatively generic workers and some kind of task queue and management that the workers pull worker from and send results to. This scales nicely while minimizing costs. Another useful technique is some form of Event based architecture and a scalable collection of workers that respond to and do work for different types of events. This can be especially beneficial if several different types of processing, not all of which may be known at original design time, need to be done and modified per event.

Always ask for business projections for the upcoming year or two, so you can test your solution upfront for the expected load growth. Remember the YAGNI principle ("You Aren't Gonna Need It"). In my experience, in 3-5 years most of the solutions outside banking sphere will be rewritten from scratch, change the cloud, or become a microservices Frankenstein with many different components you can never imagine.

It involves a combination of technical expertise, strategic thinking & effective communication. The approach to follow is, 1. Understand NFRs with its future-state expectations 2. Adopting a modular design by breaking down the software into smaller & independent component 3. Apply the relevant & suitable design patterns to provide proven solutions to recurring design problems 4. Embrace open standards & design the software to be compatible with widely accepted technologies & protocols 5. Consider the scalability from outset to accommodate traffic & data growth 6. Adapting the flexibility & quick response turnaround by implementing agile methodologies 7. Implement CI/CD pipeline to automate validating coding standards, testing & deployment.
