One of the key elements of experiential learning is that it connects the academic content to the real world and allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to authentic situations. Therefore, when you design an online group project, you should choose a problem or issue that is relevant to the social studies curriculum, but also to the students' lives and interests. For example, you could ask your students to research and propose solutions for a local or global challenge, such as climate change, poverty, human rights, or democracy. Alternatively, you could ask your students to explore and compare different perspectives and experiences of a historical or current event, such as the American Revolution, the Civil Rights Movement, or the COVID-19 pandemic.

Experiential learning can create a lifelong impact on students. During my term as the principal of a school I experienced this through a village adoption project. The students got an opportunity to apply their learnings in real life and learn more through the experience. They undertook projects like cleanliness drive, promotion of community culture and awareness programs. Students were involved in each step, from planning to organization. Such activities certainly provide a great opportunity for students to understand what they learn and also its importance in the real time world.

2 Define clear goals and expectations

Another important element of experiential learning is that it has clear and measurable goals and expectations that guide the students' learning process and outcomes. Therefore, when you assign an online group project, you should provide your students with a detailed rubric that outlines the project objectives, criteria, and indicators of success. You should also explain the roles and responsibilities of each group member, the timeline and milestones of the project, and the format and mode of presentation. Moreover, you should communicate with your students regularly and provide them with feedback and support throughout the project.

Experiential learning teaches an important skill of connecting with others and collaboration. There are various innovative ways to collaborate. COVID pandemics have taught the power of online platforms to all. students from different regions or states can also collaborate and execute a project by connecting through zoom, teams, meet etc. This will allow the students to work on a bigger level and expand their horizons. For eg. Students living in urban cities, villages, sub urban places etc. Can conduct a survey on food habits, diseases etc. Later they can collaborate and find the reasons based on the different areas and its impact.

4 Incorporate reflection and assessment

A final crucial element of experiential learning is that it involves reflection and assessment that help students evaluate their learning process and outcomes and identify their strengths and areas for improvement. Therefore, when you conclude an online group project, you should incorporate reflection and assessment activities that allow your students to showcase their learning achievements and challenges and receive feedback from you and their peers. For example, you could ask your students to create a portfolio, a blog, or a podcast that summarizes their project experience and findings. You could also ask your students to complete a self-assessment, a peer-assessment, or a group-assessment form that rates their performance and collaboration skills.
