What area of the topic does the student feel strongly about? How much does the student connect to the topic? Does the topic have a real world level of engagement for the student? Asking these questions at the beginning of the learning journey can ensure that the student is engaged, their voice acknowledged and continues to feel motivated to learn.

A very helpful note at the beginning of every new course with new students is to ask students about their expectations, needs and fears. Address these when you plan your course, you may even change, your design of the course to be more appropriate to your current students. Knowing their needs helps you in successfully planning your course and achieving its expected outcomes.

I love differentiation as a teaching tool but prefer scaffolding. Some may not see a difference between the two, but for me differentiation is about offering a slightly different task depending on levels whereas scaffolding is about making the same activity accessible to everyone. We do this by providing key vocab and a loose method for completing it. This has everyone starting at the same point rather than different starting points for everyone. That being said, none of this is possible if you don’t know your students.

Learning is all about giving and receiving information for the upgradation of knowledge, both for the trainer and the learner. Over the years, I have seen that interaction, story telling, music and sessions comprising tongue twisters and pronunciation exercise bring out the desired outcome. Basically, everyone wants to learn but inhibition, diffidence and low self esteem kills the enthusiasm. I believe that appreciation in the form of drawing smileys and icecreams on the reverse side of the palm or the panel/white board will help in happy learning sessions.

I diversify my lessons by using different types of mediums either articles, videos or class discussions. I use that in a routine so that students know that they’re not always going to get just a article about a topic. They’re also going to get a video or they will get visual about each topic. This way, I’ve also seen that students are more engaged because even in, let’s say videos,for example, they don’t always get an academic video they’ll get a news article or how to video. This allows students to have different perspectives on topics. I use have been using this for my AP CSP class for the how the internet works unit.

This is a very important point. When you are teaching in front of an entire classroom, everybody has different learning styles. So you need to offer assignments and activities that vary based on learning styles. In my classes, I have many different types of assignments, quizzes, and a final exam. Most students end up earning an A or a B in all my classes because for example if they don't test well then they can pull their grade up by completing the assignments well. You have to offer them different opportunities to succeed in whatever course you are teaching. It does take some time and effort, but isn't that why we are educators? We want to see the students succeed and learn what we have to teach them.

As a science teacher, I have had the experience of presenting materials to students which reflect a range of thinking skills. In biology, there is an emphasis on the recall of facts (label the cell parts/give the function of parts X, Y, and Z), while in the physical sciences there is more emphasis on the skill of applying facts to a new scenario (balance this new equation based on the tricks we've learned/similar equation).
