How can you create engaging learning activities using the Gagne model?

One thing I've found helpful to capture attention (event #1) is to propose a provocative problem that relates to the context of the training. ie. "Have you ever been in a situation where....?" or "Tell me about the best/worst experience you've had with...." Then follow that by outlining the learning objectives (event # 2 and #3) through a WIIFM statement. This helps the learners embrace training as a personal/professional benefit and enhances engagement.

To gain attention the trainer must avoid cliches and create some surprise by using words in an innovative way. For example on one occasion a senior gentleman was explaining an idea and I said “ Sir I see you are pregnant…” His eyeballs expanded and I added “ ..with ideas”. Similarly, where I mean mutual interests ensure success of a partnership I say “you must ensure vested interests for both the partners “.

I still prefer the Bloom’s Taxonomy as a guideline for designing my sessions. The steps of Knowledge-Comprehension-Application-Analysis-Synthesis- Design/Decision Making are important milestones in learning objectives.

It's always good and eventful to resource different activities which have the utilization of Right & Left Brain . Also, Trainers should use their Voice Tone & Manner in the right way coupled with non verbal communication.

So so important to determine the learning outcome before you start to design. As Stephen Covey states, "Start with the end in mind". You wouldn't start any journey without putting the end destination into your GPS or Sat Nav system. If that's not clear, then you run the risk of plotting a route that is not going to get the results you desire. Get feedback during the programme, to assess how well the journey is going. This helps identify if any changes are required.

One of the most challenging tasks for any Training designer is to gaining and retaining attention of your audience/learners. Gagne’s model helps in engaging learners from the start, capturing their attention and maintaining interest throughout the learning process. The step-by-step “9 events” structure of the model helps designers create well-organized and effective learning experiences.

Some of the challenges are: # It can be time-consuming and complex to design and implement instruction that follows the nine events of instruction for each learning outcome. # It can be difficult to assess and measure the different types of learning outcomes, such as cognitive strategies, attitudes, and intellectual skills2. # It can be challenging to adapt the model to different contexts, cultures, and learners, especially those who have diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs. # It can be hard to balance the structure and flexibility of the model, as some learners may prefer more autonomy and creativity in their learning process.

I don't see many challenges with this style or the experiential learning style. A trainer/presenter needs presence command of a room. Stimulating emotion or recall gauges people in, being rapport and connection. Walking learners through the process gives them time to see its value and you assess interpretation from there.
