There's no point doing something, if no one knows about it and theres no point advertising something if people have to question what the product/cause or intention is. Create a clear them that create us a WOW response. Emotions are more remembered/recalled then a constant stream of text. Having consistency and repetitive factors (ie icons, colour, format) will re ignite attention and sense of urgency/curiosity with your brand.

I've always found live auctions to be a fun way to engage the crowd, especially when we put the auction on the big screen. On one virtual auction we worked for the Carter Center, an audience member wanted the auctioneer to put his cowboy hat up for bid - which he did and it sold for $300k!!

Not only do you need to make it interactive or a pleasant experience, but you also need the event to communicate your "Why," not by telling the people attending but rather by curating the experience to feel like your why. A great example of this would be the deltaDRIFT event that I helped plan with the non-profit studioDRIFT last April. It was a two-day event, and the first day was a community-focused fish fry. While we spent hours coordinating food, entertainment, PR, etc., for the event, the thing that people talked about the most was the way that the event felt. The atmosphere of the event needs to reflect your Why. You can do this by carefully selecting the venue, the people that you collaborate with, etc.

When running auctions or raffles as part of a fundraiser always hire a professional host. It’s ok having the business owner if they have the stage presence and charisma to control the room, but normally this is not the case. When you use a professional they will engage the audience without the “in jokes” that get tiresome for others and will keep things moving. Death by raffle is also one to be avoided, either stick to a few great prizes, or if you have a mass of smaller prizes, pre draw the numbers and stick them on the items so people can collect in their own time. Nothing kills the party quicker than someone reading out numbers for 45 mins. Most important is to ensure the blend of entertainment to fundraising is right.

For me, interaction is everything! Introducing Events prides itself on creating experiences, not just gatherings of people. An organization I collaborate with raises money with an annual event, where they provide a meal and highlight the achievements of the previous year and take donations at the event, as well as offering information on how people can set up auto-donations. Whether or not any of these aspects applies to your fundraiser, the key, I believe, is showing people what their money will be promoting…if you don’t have success stories already, it will be hard to achieve a core of dedicated supporters. This means, if you are a ground-level entity just getting started, you must be doing the work it requires to earn the rewards, before you can ask others to support your efforts along the way. Consistent growth is key.

One word - Passion. Your audience will see and feel your energy due to your passion for your work. I also organise music events. My (the band's) audience will feel electric when entering. They need to know you are not only after their money, buy primarily for them to have the best time. People are then much more likely to give donations, because they are convinced you are not there to mess around. Then ultimately, give feedback. Do not be scarce afterwards. Let it be an annual fundraiser and get them hyped for an even bigger, better show next time.

Be very clear on your fundraising goal and set your budget for the event accordingly. I am constantly shocked at how many fundraising events cost more than they bring in. In-kind material or service donations for the event are helpful. Additionally keep in contact with your guests. Gaining those funds on event day is great but by keeping in contact with those supporters you can get continual donations rolling in. For businesses aim to get those large donations right around end of fiscal year for those tax deductions.

Cultivate relationships: Use the event as an opportunity to build relationships with attendees. Connect with them personally, listen to their stories, and express gratitude for their support. Building strong relationships can lead to long-term donor engagement.
