So, countries like India have lighting requirements that can be woven around the available sunlight, as it is available in abundance. Countries in the western hemisphere, which usually have less equitable distribution of sunlight though the year would need different solutions. So, in my view, the first and the foremost point is to factor-in the amount of available sunlight and then design the lighting solutions around it. This will not only be beneficial for the users of that built-environment but also help design energy-efficient lighting & heating/cooling solutions.

Light sources - luminaires as they are termed in industry parlance, play a very important role. Yes, most of the lighting around us these days is LED-based. But it is also important to understand that even within this category, we can go in for colour control. Colours affect our moods, efficiencies, etc. Display areas/working zones require more brightly-lit spaces (though over-lit is definitely avoidable) and so higher lumens might be desirable. Relaxing zones can be lit with more warm colours. Also, it is important to go for high-quality luminaires since these will not only last longer (driver plays the most important part in the life of an LED luminaire) but also provide the correct colour-rendering.

It is a good practice to not compromise on the quality of luminaires just to economise on the initial costs. Well, it does more damage than any good. A good luminaire not only gives the right output in terms of the desired lumens but also gives it consistently over it's lifetime and that too without much variations in it's energy consumption. Good luminaires are a result of good engineering. So, make it count.
