How can you create a data-driven culture in your research organization?

One time at my work, I had the opportunity to lead an initiative aimed at creating a data-driven culture within our research organization. It was an exciting and challenging undertaking. We recognized that leveraging data could significantly enhance the quality and efficiency of our research projects. Our first step was to define clear data goals. We needed to answer critical questions using data and align those goals with our research objectives and the expectations of our stakeholders.

Defining the data goals also needs the shared definition of tactical, operational, and strategic goals. This way stakeholder expectations and forming insights from any type of data are directly connected to the right context.

Data skills should be taught to leadership as well, so that they understand how different types of data is being collected, analysed and used in decision-making.

Setting up a data-driven culture requires also mapping out the current maturity level, recognising areas of improvement, and setting up development goals. Often the work begins in creating a shared language of talking about findings vs. insights. Too often the term insights is used as a poor synonym for data, research, investigation, inquiry, results and/or findings.
