How can you create a culture of recognition?

To foster a culture of recognition: 1. Lead by example, showing appreciation. 2. Set clear criteria for recognition tied to values. 3. Offer frequent, specific feedback. 4. Use various channels for recognition. 5. Encourage peer-to-peer acknowledgment. 6. Ensure inclusivity and fairness in recognition. 7. Customize recognition to individuals. 8. Connect recognition with growth opportunities. 9. Celebrate both small and big milestones consistently. 10. Establish a feedback loop for preferences.

Creating a culture of recognition needs to come from all leaders in the group - starting with you at the top. Here are some simple ways to begin to incorporate a culture of recognition: 1. send personal emails/kudos when someone has done something well, contributed to an important conversation, or demonstrated courage/commitment out of their comfort zone. cc their management chain 2. Send congrats email to the entire organization monthly highlighting the great work individuals and teams have done. I use color and size to highlight names and I include both ICs and their teams. I encourage my boss to OTT cascade goodness. 3. I send out weekly highlights with fun comics/memes 4. Host high performer/high contributor lunches/dinners/events

Recognition needs to be an authentic part of the culture, not a box that gets “ticked”. Organizations need to connect the dots between the behaviours that represent their values, and the outcomes that represent success, and how their consultants contribute to their achievement. The more tangible and discreet those behaviours and results are, the more recognizable they become in individual performance. It takes effort and commitment to evaluate what the individual behaviours and outcomes look like which aggregate into firm-wide successes. However without this effort, recognition programs can end up feeling sporadic and disconnected. Consultants will struggle to understand why the work they are doing isn’t ′enough’ to get recognized.

Before launching recognition programs, define your goals. Identify the behaviors, values, and outcomes to reward that align with your company's mission and strategy. Consider how you'll gauge the impact of recognition on employee performance, satisfaction, and retention. A clear vision ensures effective design and communication of your initiatives.

Immediate recognition boosts morale and encourages excellence. It's vital to detail what was achieved, its importance, and how it aligns with our goals. This approach, complemented by formal reviews, is key to fostering a motivated and productive workplace.

Few things are more impactful than being recognized by peers. Create an environment that allows peers to recognize and champion one another, whether it be through on the spot feedback, praise or in the group meetings. You can allow it to happen via slack, groups, teams, etc.

Build all these points into the culture takes time and isn't just a one time activity - if its important to the organisation then it needs to be revisited and revised and lived.
