Transitions and effects should be used lightly. In general 99% of the "transitions" are basic cuts and there are multiple reasons for this. Other transitions take more time and can be time relevant for example the slower swipe transitions in the original Star Wars movies (which the newer movies also used because of the similar style). Sure flashier transitions can be used to make a statement but those should be used in correct places. Less is more in this case in my opinnion.
