How can you create a conflict resolution process that prevents conflicts from occurring?

Conflicts are a natural part of any human interaction, and the goal shouldn’t necessarily be to eliminate them entirely, as they may, in fact, hinder learning and growth. Instead, the focus should be on creating an environment where conflicts are managed constructively and resolved in a way that strengthens relationships and promotes knowledge building. A culture of open, judgement-free communication, collaborative spirit and ongoing learning is necessary. Leaders have to cultivate that culture as a priority, especially in an era where lower productivity and quiet quitting is impacting organisations at unprecedented levels. The culture determines the character of the organisation. And that character should enable respectful conflict.

Any conflict can be resolved by: 1. Having trust in the resolution process 2. Collaborative approach of finding a solution 3. Listening and understanding the concerns of the parties involved 4. Acceptance of the solution and not looking back on what would have been

A few insights: 1. Understand different personality styles. Whether using MBTI, Enneagram, DISC or another tool, it's important to understand not only your preferences in communication and what your triggers are but also how other styles react and interact. Respect other perspectives and the differences between us 2. Be careful of the stories you tell yourself. Many times we misinterpret what someone said or did. 3. Do a check-in with the person. Tell them the story you are telling yourself. Then have the open communication to talk through it.

You can lessen the amount of conflict when your organization and its members are crystal clear about the organization's purpose and priorities. Walt Disney's purpose, in the parks for example, was creating happiness and the way his team members got there was to follow a simple decision making filter: Is it safe, courteous, good show, efficient? With such clear objectives, conflict can be minimized. I have, for instance, remade the cultures of several organizations to give them clarity in what they are actually about and how to make the best decisions. This idea will not stop all conflicts from happening, but is really instrumental in getting people on the same page, and making decisions/solving issues is easier with this level of clarity.

While identifying the common sources of conflict, it is always recommended to use a longitudinal analysis of the situation and to clearly identify which elements require resolution and which elements can be left unsolved. I have seen many teams invest significant time and effort in resolving conflicts about topics that sooner rather than later become irrelevant due to the organisation’s direction or external changes. Conflict is always contextual and should be analysed as a dynamic and interdependent variable.

In my experience, best conflict resolution (though it is very much contextual) approach is through collaborating. The approach usually brings both sides satisfied. Critical that the process is carried out on logic and in an environment of Trust. The leader needs to have the patience and the ability to go down to detail and then take logic or data or experience based decision.

From my experience, the majority of professional, domestic conflict stems from people not being aware of each other individual personality styles No style is better than the other, personality diversity is important across an organisation in order to deliver culture depth I am a fan of Myers-Briggs, I find it works best when the Team openly share and the understand each other values and importantly what each person bring to the the table, differently. This works best when neutrally facilitated. This openness starts with the Organisation (SMT) sharing their own personality, culture motivators, and inviting different personality preference types to the table

In conflict resolution, there is a great role for time. Do not hurry for quick settlement. Give the time to both partners to make their "business case" : understand where they come from, what triggered the discussion, are there influences from the family, teaching environment, colleges, friends? Each side has to be able to make for themselves a full piicture, and estimate foe all stakeholders how they will react and if you would lose your face. We should always respect the human being behind the people we are in conflict with.

You are joking with Hamas the total hatred by Hamas of anything Jewish is their life and there is no change. Look at the attack a week ago and the acts of terror carried out by Hamas against predominantly unarmed civilians and what Hamas terrorists did. Being an ex serviceman over many years including 4 years in Northern Ireland in the early/mid 70, I have never seen anything so depraved towards our fellow humans. You can't call Hamas human in any way shape or form.

What has worked for me in my organizations is to build a culture of openness and tolerance - our differences make us stronger when we are open to hear one another out. This will happen only when there is trust and respect for one another. Conflicts are bound to happen and its good to have them as long as we address them with patience.

A trusted organizational conflict resolution process must be human-centric in its aims to serve as a fair, impartial and confidential resource. This aim applies to both users and administrators. Users should be informed of the process’ importance and relevance to discuss their concerns. Provide users transparency on what problem-solving options the process offers to anticipate and resolve conflicts and disputes. Provide regular and specialized training where required to the administrators to build stronger relationships and achieve effective and lasting results. Remember, skills and attitude training does not have to be provided all at once to staff. Get outside help from an external third party, if necessary.

In order to be able to monitor objectively, it is important to have define goals and metrics. What do you want to achieve after having resolved the conflict? What is the outcome or behaviour that you want to see? How are you going to measure or validate that we have reached the objective? If an objective is not SMART or measurable, it becomes impossible to monitor.

Suggestions: 1. Minimise the conflicts by building a culture where positive debate is part of daily practice. 2. Help your people to understand that conflicts have their roots mostly somewhere else than in the issue. 3. Provide people training, where they learn about personalities (science based program like BIG5), the impact of biases and methods to calm down emotions 4. Train some of your employees as dialog leaders, which means that they can facilitate dialogs without becoming emotionally involved 5. Ensure that managers are willing and able to act on arising conflicts on early stage. At the end of the day, you need accept that some people might not be a match with your organisation. Then help them to make their career move onwards.

As Montse has said, it's a mistake to treat conflict as a thing to be feared and separated off. Conflict is just an expression of difference in relationships, and it's perfectly possible to teach people to allow difference and use it productively, creatively and generatively.

Conflict is inherent in any type of a relationship, therefore it can never be eradicated instead it needs to suppressed by effective management strategies. Strategies my vary given the nature of conflict. Conflict can be identified from distance if there are effective risk management strategies in place.
