How can you create a career path for employees in your small business?

I know the question says how, but the reason why most small businesses will fail at this is because there is no clear “why” you’re doing it. So the first question to ask is why do you want to grow the business? Second is to ask your employees why they want to help and be part of it? That’s the best way to get buy in and if you’re an open owner you’ll be listening to everything they have to say. Then the how becomes a lot easier!

You need to identify your business needs to nurture and give your team higher roles. We started to scale team members, there was a requirement of an operations manager. The people who joined as a part of the content team who had shown good potential in coordinating with team, understood the business goals, and whom shown potential to execute it were chosen as the operations managers. Overall this helped us in two ways. 1. Reduce the training time if we were to hire a new person the person should understand the nuances first . 2. The person then became the ops manager of the overall team under that business pillar helping to carve the career path. So understanding the goals and promoting the fit team members will help.

It’s impossible to design a career path for your employees. If you haven’t laid out your own short term in long-term goals. Expose your team members individually or as a group to a mission or objective that they are not currently. This can help you to identify the skills each member has.
