The issue with AI continues to be monetizing an application to achieve a sustainable profit. Due to the staggering development costs, and ongoing maintenance related costs, realizing a full return on investment, and sustained profit, remains elusive in most cases. It is difficult to imagine a good outcome for a startup operating without a well-articulated revenue recovery plan. Having been down this path, I can safely say this will be the downfall of even the most brilliant ideas. There are many monetization questions in search of an answer. I believe the most elemental question is, what technology and revenue stream does my idea supplant? I will share additional questions later.

When I started my NLP API company back in 2021, I spent some time developing the algorithms with very few roadblocks. When it came time to put my models online, that's when I first ran into technical roadblocks. There's not a lot of technical constraint on what you can do to train a model, but there is constraint on what you can load into production.

Considering on what level of performance is necessary for the application at hand in the context of the effort to put into production is also key. If a "simple" logistic regression method gives performance relatively similar, albeit slightly worse, compared to a complex and computationally intensive deep neural net based method, one should consider the amount of resources necessary to put the more complex method into production. It is often the case that the simpler method can be put into affect in a very low cost manner and can immediately see a return of value, though this is of course highly dependent on the problem. All in all, you need to know your problem space more than anything else.
