How can you continue your education in cybersecurity to stay ahead of the curve?

Nothing like getting hands-on when it comes to technology. You either get the opportunity to work on security in your day to day work or you create that opportunity via self learning through online courses on platforms such as orielly, edx etc. This can then help you bolster your exam prep as well.

Consider pursuing certifications or training related to emerging technologies. Depending on your personal career aspirations and advanced degree may be an option. Attend cybersecurity conferences, workshops, and webinars. These events are great way to learn about the latest threats and technologies, and for networking with other professionals. Join cybersecurity communities and forums, such as those on LinkedIn, Reddit. Listen to podcasts and lastly Read, Read, Read!

1. Stay Curious to Understand the Tech behind the System, (If you don't know what it is, can't secure it properly) 2. Network with Cyber community - We come across a lot of Cyber Professionals in various Platform such as LinkedIn, Discord, etc sharing their Experience. Listening to Experience is super Valuable. 3. Participate in Conferences, Meetup, Webcasts, CTF Events - Teaming with cyber folks and learning is Great fun. 4. Utilize the Online Content available - Platforms to get HandsOn skills from HackTheBox, TryHackMe, SecurityBlueTeam, Cyberdefenders, Letsdefend are GoldMine !! (Online courses and trainings are fine too) 5. We also learn everyday from our co-workers, managers and different team we work along with. 6. Home Lab !!!

Companies such as Google, Cisco, and SAP have already launched their own innovative learning programs. We have a chance to catch up with them and enhance our skills. We need to inspire ourselves to dedicate some time to learning.

I highly recommend finding 2 or 3 podcasts that you follow consistently. There are many daily and weekly cybernews podcasts applicable to all roles in information security. Aim for a good mix of news and general skill development. Supplement this with webinars and other events. These are plentiful, just keep in mind who hosts the event. Often they are vendor sponsored and likely have a secondary sales agenda.

Webinars and podcasts are your best friends for quick insights and the latest buzz in cybersec. They're perfect for learning on the go. You can soak up wisdom from top experts without having to leave your couch.

Supplementing your learning through webinars and podcasts further enriches your knowledge base. Until recently, the best place to find high-quality security information was Twitter. In addition to all the mentioned blogs and newsletters, there are accounts of actual researchers and practitioners who publish their findings firsthand. Moreover, Telegram channels and LinkedIn feeds can also be quite useful in keeping you up-to-date with the latest security-related information and the possibility of engaging directly with experts in the field. Make sure to curate your feed carefully and select trusted and diverse sources that align with your topics of interest. This approach ensures you receive a broad and reliable perspective on the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity.

Keep an eye on cool cybersecurity blogs and sign up for newsletters. They're the fast track to what's hot and what's not in the cyber world. Whether it's the newest threat or a clever hack, these reads keep you in the loop.

Staying informed through blogs and newsletters can significantly contribute to your expertise. These written platforms offer insights, analysis, tips, and opinions, ensuring you are abreast of the latest developments, challenges, and solutions in cybersecurity. Furthermore, they serve as a valuable resource for discovering new tools, resources, and industry events that can complement and enhance your learning experience.

I find official books preparing professionals for formal certifications, such as CISSP, CISM, SANS, OSCP, and others, particularly useful as they cover each cybersecurity domain at a deeper level than what most people are exposed to during their day-to-day work activities. Some journals are better than others but personally, I'm finding the ISC2 News and Insights journal particularly useful and I've been reading it since becoming a member of ISC2 in 2009.

Books and journals provide comprehensive and authoritative information, aiding in the understanding of fundamental concepts, principles, and frameworks that are integral to the practice of cybersecurity. Moreover, they offer exposure to diverse perspectives, debates, and controversies that continually shape the landscape of cybersecurity.

Get involved in cybersecurity groups and hit up events. Whether it’s online forums, local meetups, or big-time conferences, these are your ticket to networking, sharing tricks of the trade, and getting the lowdown on cool tools and techniques.

That is my number one priority in education and information exchange. Engaging with cybersecurity communities and participating in industry events also plays a pivotal role in advancing your cybersecurity education. These platforms provide exceptional opportunities for networking with peers, professionals, and experts, facilitating the exchange of ideas, feedback, and collaborative project opportunities. By connecting with others, you can gain insights from their experiences and learn from their challenges or successes.

The best way to learn technology is to play with it. Be curious about the "how" of everything. If you know what breaks things, you will find it easy to learn how to fix it. Hands on experience always is worth a lot more than theoretical knowledge.

For deep undertanding of cybersecurity, I also recommend being accustomed to the NIST Special Publications as well as the SANS reading room. From my experience these resources provide a good deal of theoretical foundation, cybersecurity frameworks, controls, templates, research findings, survey results, And best practices.

Nothing will beat hands on experience! If possible, get your hands on the new product, be it free version or limited use, set up a lab or small network at home, even if it’s virtual. Try to learn the options, watch various videos and tutorials to get multiple perspectives, and try to use the product, integrate it, even break it! We learn more when things go wrong than when everything just works!
