For any monitoring program to be worth the effort to gather meaningful information; you of course need to know about the baseline water quality from the source, either from the raw or on the treated effluent, prior to entry to the distribution system. When we created the monitoring program to deal with the Amoeba, we took the time to put all things on the table. There are several conditions that support the growth of Naegleria Fowleri in Distribution systems: Surface Water Systems with temperatures reaching 77*F, systems that utilize chloramination and systems that chlorinate ground water with natural occurring ammonia are at risk. As most know, waters with ammonia have the potential of nitrifying bacteria building in their system.
