How can you communicate your product design story in a presentation?

Its a good idea to try figure out the audience, expectations and knowledge. A narrative that ties the concept to personal experience helps. It seems my most successful discussion on ergonomics was the hard straight back Yorkshire 'settle' bench found in pubs. Do people remember the discomfort in those pubs - and if not - why not? This kind of interaction gets the audience thinking.

What works for me to inspire an audience: be yourself, don't just use your mind but also your heart. That works best if what you present is in line with your values. If it's good for the world, it's good for you, for your clients and it will give you a glowing presence.

Before you start designing your presentation, you need to understand who you are talking to and what they expect from you. Do some research on their background, interests, needs, and goals. What are their pain points and challenges? What are their preferences and values? How can your product design solution address them? Knowing your audience will help you tailor your message, tone, and style to suit them.

Not knowing the audience is like wandering without a target and knowing makes it comprehensible. Adequate information on the target audience is a must before starting any design activity, though the exploration and knowing who are you designing for must continue during the entire process to realize various aspects essential for the product.

For a project presentation, my main objective could be to effectively communicate the key aspects of my project, including its purpose, process, and outcomes. Considering the first thing I need to do to present the product design story is to start with a clear objective of why, for what, and for whom the product is intended. I consider that the foundation of each project is an idea supported by an objective, taking as input specifications or needs created from a consumer.

One of the most effective storytelling formats is by actually telling it out verbally. The use of effective images or graphics is important while presenting. But they should be just aides as visual context for the already vivid verbal description. One should take advantages of the various people or objects in the back ground while the design processes is on-going. It substantiates the story that we built.

You have to set the seed of belief in your audience. Take them through the solution story, the "whats" and "whys" behind your decisions

Clean. Upbeat. Visual with tempo. Think of the slides as your context, it doesn’t always have to be literal but sometimes super literal is fun. Think memorable, impactful, informative, entertaining or maybe most important - relevant? A friend and marketeer once told me - "advertising is a nuisance so at least add value and make it entertaining."

Your storytelling has to connect the dots for people. Don't assume they will see the same connections that you did - that takes vision. Make them feel like they are coming along for the ride, not just being told a punchline. Also, in Industrial Design, you will rarely give a presentation to just Marketing, or just Engineering, or just Supply Chain. You'll be pitching to all of them and more - all at the same time. So your story cannot just be one dimensional.

Discuss the design influences and philosophies that guided your decision-making. Whether it's minimalism, sustainability, or user-centered design, explain the principles that shaped your product's aesthetics and functionality.

Use a clear, sequential flow, dividing into key sections – ideation, iterations and final design. Each phase must interlace seamlessly, ensuring a coherent, engaging storyline. Balancing details with brevity, infusing emotion and highlighting the design's evolution creates a captivating presentation that resonates deeply with your audience.

The Heroes Journey. Like all good narrative - beginning, middle, end. Hook, Line Sinker. Intro, Problem, Solution, why’s and vision all that good stuff. But most importantly, passion and authenticity. Connect it to you as a person - they are buying you not the product in fact. Be vulnerable and honest and almost any structure will work.

Every Story has a you BEGINING and an END. And...aah off course...how can we forget the body or the plot? But do we always remember the course of the story? Structure your story such that the three most important words in Storytelling are addressed to ENTERTAINMENT!! ENTERTAINMENT!! ENTERTAINMENT!! First Entertainment is for the Storyteller. Unless we are entertained we cannot entertain others Second Entertainment is for the intended listeners who are your major stakeholders Third Entertainment is for that unintended audience, the people around or your potential stakeholders

Quick Tip For Those Who Are Nervous Presenters: While presenting, the opening few minutes are the most challenging as it is the point where one is most likely to let their fear of public speaking get the better of them. Of course, rehearse your presentation at least 5 times, but MEMORIZE your first minute or so to where you can do it in your sleep. This will lower your anxiety dramatically as the focus turns to you, and ease you into your flow while delivering your narrative. This technique is a true life hack for those of us who would rather ingest a mild poison than speak in public... but have to anyway.

???Practicing your delivery resembles rehearsing a play. ??Start by crafting the script, noting key points and transitions. Rehearse aloud to refine pacing and fluency. Record yourself, observing tone, gestures, and pauses. Practice in front of a mirror or a trusted colleague for feedback. Embrace different settings to adapt to varied audiences and environments. Visualization techniques can bolster confidence, allowing you to project authenticity and passion during the actual presentation. ??Repeated rehearsals familiarize you with the narrative, fostering a natural and compelling delivery that captivates your audience.

Practice really does make perfect. I make notes for each slide in key capital words. 2 or 3 key words for each slide as mental queues. I use this to rehearse and make no mistake the more I rehearse the better the end product. Because likely you will go blank for a brief moment and a well-drilled brain will pick up on a more impactful, practiced tangent rather than a random potentially less relevant and less valuable one. If you only have minutes every sentence counts and you want to know which one is coming out of your mouth, when.

So it is very important to structure the story based on the impact we desire. Often if we are unable to catch the attention of the listener or audience in the first 30 seconds of our presentation, it results in us taking a longer time to convince the plot. Hence we need to handle our story in such a way so as to get the audience thirsty to know more about our story. The plot then has to be built step by step till we get the audience all excited. Then it is time for the climax where we get the audience to rerun the complete story in their mind. This normally the result of a well-practiced story telling.

Often, there's a temptation to don a mask, to portray ourselves as someone we think others want to see. To play. Yet, it's authenticity that truly captivates an audience. Authenticity shines through, making our message not only relatable but also compelling. Allow yourself to show a little bit of personal vulnerability and imperfection to establish a deeper connection with your listeners.

When technical issues arise in your presentation, which is inevitable given enough time, try and view it as an audience member would. Share your frustrations with them but keep it lighthearted. The phrase "Is there an IT person in the house?" has saved me on more than one occasion and made the audience sympathetic to my situation. Having a few quips such as this in your pocket can help you ease your way out of many sticky situations.
