Crafting a vision for social impact and community building begins with a defined purpose, a compass guiding my actions. Defining the purpose of any social impact initiative starts at the very beginning--why? What is your goal? How can you measure it? Who in your company and sphere can you learn from, whether it's about the movement, the on-the-ground needs, how your organization can best apply itself to the problem. Hopefully the initiative bubbled up from your front-line--those are your activists and ambassadors--go to them and actively listen without judgment before making a plan of action. That active listening can and should underpin your approach with measurable goals and outcomes.

We tend to act when there is a purpose behind doing so. Therefore, defining clearly the purpose would enable me act and serve better. I need to ask myself a few questions: -Do I want to solve a problem/s for others and is that going to make me happy and bring satisfaction to them? - Have I understood their needs and aspirations and do I find those valuable ? -Have I placed them first and self in their positions ? - Do I have the competence to do that by ethical standards in a scale that would make others in large numbers satisfied and happy ? On arriving at answers to the questions, I would be able to visualize 'what'and 'how' part of all that I intend to do. Now, I will have a clearly defined purpose enabling me reach out to them.

Although stories do have "parts" to them (as outlined on the side), the three main elements that one keep in mind when crafting one is that it is relevant, fluid, and emotional. Relevant: it must be to the audience it is intended for otherwise it will be ingored Fluid: should be easily understood without needing a thesaurus to decipher it Emotional: it must incite a feeling in the audience, thereby encoding the main messages into their consciousness in a much deeper way.

The how you present your vision, is just as (if not more) important as the vision itself. The wrong moment, the wrong location, the wrong timing, could mean it is not seen or understood. Also, all moments are not created equal which means the base "vision" must also be tweaked to be made more relevant for that moment of delivery. A formal press release will have a different tone and content versus an informal town-hall meeting with employees.

People rarely build things when they can't see the end product. And they're going to be even more reluctant if a stranger is asking them to do it. If you want to inspire the building of social community building, people need a vision of the community. And it needs to be a vision that appeals to them, which is trickier than it sounds. Hollywood has conditioned us to view idyllic-looking communities with suspicion. So don't overpromise.

So you decided you want to work for social impact. Good, but always start with a REAL problem you've identified in your community/society. Study that real problem, find the root cause, see what the "environment" is like, what the blockers are, where the opportunities lie; who are the nay-sayers, who are the allies. Talk to the direct beneficiaries of possible solutions, and learn their background and language. Only after that can you start building that community and find the story that appeals to them. Use storytelling and real examples of real people, be humble and a true advocate and they will rally around you. Don't come from a position of power or arrogance or the community will dismiss you. Be true to your chosen cause.
