How can you communicate the value of archival research to library patrons?

Historical facts depend on archives of original documents. Without careful maintenance of these items, and the careful and explicit footnotes used by researchers to prove their claims, all we have are unsubstantiated and unverifiable opinions. Facsimiles are NEVER proof of anything, simply a convenience for those assuming they are accurate and complete copies of originals. Especially in this age, that is wishful thinking.

We also shouldn't forget the historical importance of textbooks and other older books. While Medline can capture the older articles, textbooks capture standards of care and practice at the time they were published. While newer books and editions can often be found as ebooks, the older editions are gone, if not kept in print. As someone once said to me, articles are written when something new or unexpected is found. Textbooks are the backbone of documenting standard practice. Libraries that have gone all digital are, in my opinion, missing an important part of health care's history and evolution. People who research only from their computers can be missing important information they might only be able to find in printed format.

Library collections represent the community they serve. Archival research amplifies narratives and affirms intersections often snubbed because they aren't as circulated nor used as reference materials are; yet, archival items are commonly sought after. Archival research reiterates the need and desire to connect with history, distinctive narratives, and cultural communities. Archival research supports scholastic efforts to make informed decisions about history, contribute to academic spaces, pursue a greater understanding of specific subject coverage, and to gain an unmeasurable familiarity of using different library resources such as ephemera, microfilm, or visual or audio assets.

Today, digitisation of archive materials and openness of the digital assets are of most importance. Even if it is an impossible task to digitize all, the easy access digital assets represent opens many doors for both researchers and library patrons. Through openly sharing parts of the archive digitally anyone can get a better understanding of the contents and are more likely to ask for more. In my experience, the more you digitize and share, the more interest your archive will receive, and the amount of requests to dig in deeper will increase.

Archival materials are accessible via a library's listed databases or digital repository. Some libraries provide insight about their archival collection or directions of where to raise an inquiry for archival items. Finding aids descriptively guides users locating specific items within a processed archival collection. Archivists and Subject Librarians can support a patron's interest with a specific resources by supporting patrons with crafted bibliographies of reference titles or specific databases that may have digitalized portions of an archival collection. Citations are generally provided to support a scholar's archival research and interest in locating additional resources, or assets, to guide their scholastic journey.

Archival materials are usually accessible through the Special Collection Section of the Library. During the reference interview the librarian will identify the patron's information need and direct the patron to the archival material that may satisfy this need. Additionally there is a catalogue that acts as a guide to locate the material. With the assistance of the librarian patrons may use subject terms to locate information needed. The archivist or the special collection librarian will then retrieve the item assess the accessibility and inform the patron as to the prescribed use and handling of the resource. Usually preservation methods are employed such as the use of gloves, microfilm, and mylar for protection.

The Internet has vastly expanded our ability to access archival materials. Anyone with an interest and a keen eye, not to mention a sharp eye for reading someone else's handwriting, is able to view many historical documents from the comfort of their own home. Artifacts are more tricky, being fragile in the wrong hands. 3D modeling has somewhat bridged that gap. We have to remember best practices for preserving these materials, so they may continue to bring information, insight and inspiration to future generations.

While many archives, quite necessarily, subscribe to a "store and ignore" policy, public libraries curating archival material should always have the goal of access in mind. Access does not mean public handling of those materials, but rather programming them for the public to appreciate. Obviously this depends on what materials you are using, but in my experience programming archival 16mm films at NYPL, I think it's important to present archival material in the fashion it is intended. Projecting 16mm films in a theatre space helps patrons contextualize the environment those films are intended to be seen and appreciate their need for preservation.

There are the archival materials, and there is responsible usage of archival materials. We all approach our history with a bias, especially the bias of the present. Bias is not the issue. The issue is how we choose to represent the past, as we utilize archival materials to build history. We have to keep in mind our motives for accessing archival materials: what story am I telling, versus what I should tell?

Often our promotion of archival research is a celebration, but it can also be a spreading of awareness, for the betterment of the community.

An approach to support archival research is through programming, library displays, and collaboration. Library staff and archivists contribute to the art of storytelling, and circulating great resources. Library staff can use various mediums from visual and audio assets to microfilm and more-- to illustrate their subject coverage, or to highlight a specific narrative. This allows patrons to effortlessly engage with archival resources; yet, programming provides social, in-person, and scholastic events to explore displayed resources, amplifying new or often snubbed assets. Commonly paired with finding aids or pulled resources-- Library staff around the country are continuously working to better promote archival research.

You can achieve this by posting the values of using the archive on Library walls. You can have a special day in which you discuss values of using the archive with your patrons. You can reduce the archive usage fee. You need to provide good duplication materials in archive for your patrons You can have Library exhibition periods during which historical issues about the nation, peoples culture or festivals etc form news headlines. This sends patrons to archives to learn more about them. Thank you.

My library promotes archival research through physical exhibitions—both in house and travelling— online exhibitions on our website, social media posts (Facebook and Instagram), blog posts, programs, and tours—especially school groups. It is a constant struggle to get patrons in the door. So many people just want online resources, but viewing primary sources in person puts objects/documents into additional context that the online researcher may not realize. Our online presence is to increase awareness of our holdings, and to get researchers in the door.

One of the best special research libraries in the country is the Auburn Avenue Research Library, in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia. AARL is one of few special research libraries dedicated to African American Culture, History and Literature; yet, their Archivist and Archival Collection is unmatched. Located in the Historic Sweet Auburn District, this hidden gem has something for any readers. I previously worked as a Reference Librarian at AARL and enjoyed my experience supporting the Archival Staff process specific collections and new items.
