This has two aspects. One is to communicate to your beneficiaries, targeted beneficiaries, employees, suppliers. Second is investors, regulators, and observers. In my experience the language and treatment has to be distinctive. For beneficiaries and internal or ecosystem audience the message can be frequent with all updates in laguages of their choice. This is primarily to build awareness and inclusivness and even to bring more participation from beneficiaries and employees/partners. For the investor and regulator community the updates have to be periodic with clear strategy and impact analysis. This part is about transparency and accountability rather than multimedia spectacle.

Third party attribution is a key element of CSR communications. The problems that are being addressed are typically overwhelming when viewed using only data or metrics, but when you can share the benefit a program provides through the voice of someone who has personally benefited your impact will resonate much more strongly.

True CSR is about action companies take outside the gazing lens of mainstream media and chest thumping on SM. It is borne out of conviction in giving back to our society and staying as far as possible from the slippery slope of vacuous validation. It is easy to default our communication to modes that we are familiar with, i.e., digital, print, talks. But there may be other surprising modes that we don't think of. I remember reading a case study where, after trying all sorts of modes to educate women living in rural areas about contraception (not CSR, I know), they found out that the nodes of influence were hairdressers. It's in engaged conversation during haircuts when the power to influence is strongest. The campaign showed real ROI. (The details may not be accurate here because it made an impression on me.) CSR communication can come across as preachy. We need to look at where the best nodes of influence lie. They could be as unexpected as hairdressers being the agent of change.

In an Indian perspective regional print and TV are the go to media. The reach and engagment is phenomenal. Considering the large number of beneficiaries and need for significant CSR efforts towads development, regional media plays a major role. Communicating to regional authorities is also better done through regional media. For investors, regulators, national authorities and a small but influential national and international community, English print media works best followed by English TV and social media platforms. Among social media platforms LinkedIn is the best when it comes to communicating CSR efforts. It has the best engagement and real partcipation.

The choice of media depends on your communication goals and target audience. Consider using a mix of platforms like social media, blogs, videos, and traditional outlets. Tailor your content format to match audience preferences, ensuring effective and engaging communication. Regularly assess performance metrics to refine your media strategy for optimal impact.

I think at first it needs to be successful on the ground. the work has to speak about you rather than you communicating to your audience. If it's genuine CSR then communication can always wait. A mere Press release to announce is sufficient. But, at a later stage a proper video can be created and the brand should apply for awards.

Keep in mind and address “so what?” In all your CSR initiatives. What is effective in one region may fail to impress in another, but impact to people or planet can be universally understood. Translate it into the real impact by addressing “so what?” clearly in your copy. For instance, when promoting donations to charities, articulate the end benefits and impact of the donations on local communities, people or planet or the impact the cause can make. Use facts. Cultural nuances & sensibilities vary vastly in global regions, but the spirit of humanity is universal

Messaging is key to why the brand is doing any activity and what is the brand connect. Why is it necessary to do any CSR activities as key questions. Community outreach and betterment of the community be it education, healthcare or livelihood or all combined can be part of the messaging

For me the audience first is senior management and getting approvals and the second key audience is employees. You need to engage employees for your CSR activities. Finally, the CSR activities to become a success on ground you need the community outreach

There may be unexpected pushback, depending on the CSR initiative. We need to prepare for potential communication issues or backlash by having a robust crisis management plan in place. Sometimes, it's not the message but how it was delivered that the target audience finds unacceptable.

This is the most important part in CSR communication. Unlike in product or brand communication the narrative has to be real-real-real. Any amount of messaging that smells of moral superiority or brand marketing will affect trust and real engagement. Feedback is important, free flowing conversation is important. When you are giving to society communicate with hunility, gratefulness and grace.

I can share story of 'Sakhiyon Ki Baadi' project which has brought over 36,000 out-of-school girls (mostly from indegenous communities) into education fold in six years in southern Rajasthan where girl child literacy is barely in double digits. IIFL Foundation takes three ways to communicate 1) frequent communication through local media which builds community narrative and support 2) Communication through national media, awards forums and social media for reaching to investors, regulators and large global decision makers.3) Employee communication to build awareness and participation. Our narative is simple - "bring out-of-school girls into education fold" - and has been consistent over last six years. Now people easily identify the purpose.

Empathy is the only universal language, that is fail-proof. It works in every culture regardless of geography or history. Define it correctly, set high standards, and invest in your team's empathy skill development.

CSR is only relevant to your external audiences and only improves reputation if it isn’t entirely self-serving. If what you seek is credit and not societal value creation then it is going to have a disproportionally opposite outcome to that which is desired. Too often it is, to quote the preeminent poet laureate of our time, Taylor Swift, “Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism? … It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me (I'm the problem, it's me)” ????♀?
