How can you collaborate with stakeholders who have different levels of technical knowledge?

In my data science journey, I've learned that effective communication is as crucial as technical prowess. When engaging with diverse stakeholders, I adapt my approach to their knowledge level. For non-tech savvy clients, I avoid jargon and use relatable analogies to demystify AI concepts. With fellow developers, I dive into the technicalities, sharing code and models. This tailored communication fosters understanding and collaboration, ensuring that AI solutions meet everyone's needs.

Successful collaboration requires understanding and involving people with diverse technical expertise. To achieve this, it's essential to familiarize yourself with your audience, establish project objectives, set a precedent, use various communication methods, solicit feedback, facilitate education and empowerment, and commemorate accomplishments. By adapting your approach to each stakeholder's level of understanding, you can create a cooperative benefit and ensure everyone feels valued and committed to the project's success. Active participation from all parties involved is crucial for fully leveraging the capabilities of your diverse workforce.

This takes time, but I find that by "segmenting" out your audience you figure out what messaging works for different types of stakeholders. Do they come from Product, Sales, Software Development, C-Suite? What is it that really matters to them, what are they measured against? Then make sure you convey how your initiative (or whatever it is you want to communicate to them) fits into their perspective and how it brings value to them. Are we talking precision and recall, time-to-market, lines of code to maintain, or quarterly revenue targets? Bonus points if you can use their own lingo all the way through.

This is the fastest way to collaborate efficiently. Some crisp points based on years of experience: - Express gratitude for their partnership, trust, and cooperation. - Recognize contributions big and small that led to shared success. - Celebrate milestones, achievements with team events or gestures. - Amplify and share positive feedback, testimonials demonstrating impact. - Reflect "together" on key learnings and insights gained during collaboration. - Document journey highlighting challenges overcome together. - Maintain open channel for post-deployment user feedback. - Explore opportunities for future collaboration building on shared success.

Assumption is the mother of all ****ups. Don't assume your audience knows all acronyms / jargon you use on a daily basis. Don't use such things just to show off (many people do). Use the most understandable term that does the job and if it is still ends up being a niche term take 5 minutes at the start of your presentation to cover the basics to then build to the core of your presentation that relies on that knowledge to understand. Folk who already know the basics can enjoy feeling smart, while people who don't know don't get left behind, frustrated, or bored. Ensure you take as many people on your learning journey as possible!

You may need to think as your audience while presenting the stakeholders. They do not have knowledge and they does not care about metrics, ROC curves etc. They just want how effective the solution is and how the company may profit from a new project or a new application. You need to explain what is the gain from this project, what is the business value.
