I agree with this. Take this and personalize it. What is your current need: skills building, guidance, assistance? Are you looking for a mentor because you are curious or because you need the skills for your job? Do you need a hands-on learning? Is it easy to learn? There different mentors with different mentoring styles. Understanding what you need can give you a better idea of the right mentor. Don’t discount content creators or artists or people you only see online. Anyone can be a mentor, so long as you learn something valuable. Also, consider someone who can discover answers with you not just provide you. These mentors are rare but they will provide more space for understanding, learning, and retention.

This depends on your needs. In my experience there are skills and knowledge that I have learned best from people around me. Sometimes, you don’t need to look that far, in particular for the exact job that you do. Researching and reaching out to other mentors can be a good practice for networking, team members may also be a good resource pool depending on what you need.

It is in understanding the how, when, where, what, who, and why of learning that you truly get the most out of mentoring. The need for the knowledge or skill that you wish to learn will guide the questions. The best mentorships for me was when I was really curious about the topic. Consider beliefs and personality when looking for a mentor. If the mentor you like isn’t a fit, that’s ok. Be an empty cup when you start the mentoring. Understand the way you learn. When the best questions are asked, the exploration and learning happens. Challenge ideas and still be respectful. Being genuinely curious about the topic works for me. Find out what works best for you and let your mentor know.
