The first and best advice I got as a software engineer was to understand a problem and break it into smaller parts. It is one of the most effective ways of solving any problem, not just programming. Having a list of smaller problems gives a high-level understanding of the problem statement. This approach enables you to focus on one specific issue at a time. You can make better decisions by revisiting all smaller problems and checking whether your solution satisfies them all.

Understanding the problem and application requirements is crucial. - Identifying system inputs and outputs, detailing expected behaviors and functionalities. This step establishes what the system is expected to achieve; - Identifying constraints and trade-offs to clarify the system's intended functionality and limitations. This forms the basis of the initial requirements analysis, which is crucial for determining the system's performance in real-world testing and deployment; - Guiding the object-oriented design by identifying key entities, relationships, and operations within the problem domain. This step involves defining classes, attributes, and methods that encapsulate the data and behaviors relevant to your application.

Then try to find out what type of operation you need to perform on this data like searching, insertion, deletion, and any other relevant operations with which you will be able to find and improve the overall performance, it helps to opt with best standard libraries present in the DS which will help in basic operation. Remember, the choice of DSA is often context-dependent, and there might not be a one-size-fits-all solution. Regularly reviewing and reassessing your design decisions as the project evolves is a good practice.

In some cases add/update may be minimal, but retrieval may be heavy, or vice versa. Choose the data structure based on these patterns. For example, a hash table is much more efficient than list when data load/addition is done once in a while compare to retrievals. But if the logic works on data is to load data from a storage and scan sequentially, hash table doesn't make sense. In multithreaded application where thread safety is not guaranteed, it could be handled at data structure level by choosing thread-safe data structures provided by the programing language/framework.

Whatever algorithm you decide on, these should be ensured. - no repetition of code, try referencing existing algorithms as much as possible - handle exceptions and logging in every step - document every step with references to original requirements - make sure to use switches for every feature or functionality that can be toggled on or off by the business or through releases - the code should be easily readable and understandable for future maintainability

If an algorithms is not drawn on paper, definitely it is going to give problems post development phase as it fails in all factors like correctness, simplicity, readability,etc..

Not all design principles fit every use case. Choosing the wrong design principle may make the code inefficient in terms of both performance and readability. One must take his/her algorithm into account and decide which mechanism will benefit them. Choosing between Inheritance vs Composition, polymorphism or no polymorphism etc, all these are the OOP related analysis one must do. Similarly, one must evaluate the use of design pattern, like strategy pattern vs template pattern, decorator pattern vs adaptor pattern. One must understand what they are using and why, before making any design changes.

There are other design pattern books as well, of course, so pick one up and become familiar with them.

I would encourage everyone to try Test Driven Development. It helps produce clean, testable designs and code. It's harder to do than it sounds, but you end up getting into a rhythm with it over time, and it pays generous dividends over the long term.

Test driven development is the best approach which can not be ignored. Any line which is not covered in coverage is always a risk. It same for skipping any kind of testing.

I've often found it helpful to maintain a set of test data and/or a script that would help unit test common scenarios in one go.

In addition to your own testing, test data, etc, it is wise to review the testing process and results with others, in particular the users of what is being built. It is possible to find out things that were missed, on find out invalid assumptions, etc. The sooner this additional validation step is done, additional time is saved, either in fixing bugs or making other improvements.

Some important considerations for testing: - fail early - fail often - never fail again with same failures from before - the goal of the tester is to ensure that business requirements are met and that the applican cannot be broken easily (bad data, unexpected user responses, security etc)

A hack I found useful here is to make social networks work for you, getting the examples/explanations from your network. How? Two ways. 1. Write a post briefly explaining the challenge (mask if necessary) and ask the community to pitch in. It's better if you already write a few options you thought of, so people can comment on them or open their mind to suggest alternatives. 2. Pin point people you think are handling similar challenges and ask them about their solutions. You'll be surprised, but when given the chance, many people are happy to share.

Apart from following the typical evaluation process, it’s also crucial to evaluate trade-offs such as time vs space complexity, flexibility vs efficiency, speed vs cost, current vs future growth and simplicity vs complexity while choosing the data structures and algorithms. By understanding these trade-offs and carefully analyzing needs, we can make informed decisions about choosing the right data structures and algorithms.

Data Structures and Algorithms have little to do with design, whether object-oriented or not. They operate at a much lower level, focusing on functionality and behavior, whereas design encompasses decomposition, integration, structure, extensibility, and maintainability. Data structures and algorithms are implementation details that have little to no effect on design, unless the design is already flawed and we are seeking workarounds to improve performance.

Being a visual person, I like to draw out diagrams on paper - just sloppy dots and lines at first, then after rethinking the problem and redrawing data flows and processes, I have the initial plan. Having visually drawn out how the algorithm and which data structure will work, I can usually see how the project breaks down into smaller chunks of code and independent objects… this breakdown and visualization tool usually reveals similarities between objects that indicate useful interfaces or abstracts to build out first.

Data structures are based on nonfunctional requirements such as volume of data, latency, growth, and targeted infrastructure. These variables are the same regardless of object oriented or procedural.

I guess modularising your framework codes makes a much more effective way of approaching data transformation.That includes using existing libraries and also creating your own libraries.
