1 What is hybrid cloud?

Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing model that combines public and private cloud services, with a secure connection between them. This allows you to leverage the benefits of both worlds, such as scalability, cost-efficiency, security, and performance. For example, you can use public cloud for non-sensitive or high-demand workloads, and private cloud for sensitive or mission-critical workloads. You can also move data and applications between the two environments as needed, depending on your changing requirements and preferences.

I think the current definition (at time of writing) starts well with describing 'Hybrid Cloud' but falls down in the example. I think the confusion here comes from the lack of clarity on if people are trying to describe an 'application' or 'service' that may have a 'hybrid' approach to delivery (i.e. mixed on premise and public infrastructures - for different tasks or stages of an applications lifecycle) or the 'nirvana' of 'Hybrid' Cloud of operating a 'Hybrid' Platform - i.e. workloads ''bursting' to Public Cloud when on-premise capacity is exceeded (or even better - 'draining' from Public Cloud to maximise use of underutilised idle 'on-premise' assets) So what is 'Hybrid Cloud' is the 'wrong' question (sorry!)

2 What is multi-cloud?

Multi-cloud is a cloud computing model that uses multiple public cloud services from different providers, without any integration or connection between them. This allows you to diversify your cloud portfolio, avoid vendor lock-in, optimize costs, and access the best features and capabilities of each provider. For example, you can use AWS for compute, Google Cloud for AI, and Azure for database. You can also distribute your workloads across different regions and zones, to improve availability, resilience, and performance.

I think this definition and example of 'Multi-Cloud' is fair but fails to highlight how hard / 'optimistic' the example outlined is. I'm sure there are organisations out there leveraging 'Multi-Cloud' in the way the current example outlines - but they are in the minority. My experience is most organisations with 'more than one' cloud are operating 'Multiple' Clouds - not the seamless 'Multi-Cloud' experience suggested here I think the question should comment on the 'tension' of Multi-Cloud - which is the adoption of 'common' services between clouds to enable portability and interoperability - means avoid full adoption of the managed / 'native' services of cloud providers - which conflicts with reasons for adopting the cloud!

One key thing I think is missing here is "What do the people in your business who are building Apps and Services need?". Only then can the decision on the Hybrid/Multi, or Hybrid as part of Multi be made. Without this you can risk a "build it and they will come" approach. meanwhile the Developer community are off working on their own 'Cloud/Platform'.

Hybrid and multi-cloud models offer businesses many benefits, such as increased scalability and flexibility, reduced costs and risks, enhanced security and compliance, improved performance and availability, and greater innovation and differentiation. However, these models also pose some challenges. Complexity and management overhead can be increased due to multiple cloud environments and services. Compatibility and integration issues may arise with different cloud platforms and standards. Skills and resources may be required to master and operate multiple cloud tools and processes. Performance and reliability could be affected by internet connectivity or latency. Additionally, it can be more difficult to optimize costs and avoid waste by having to track multiple cloud bills and contracts.

To overcome the challenges of hybrid and multi-cloud models, you should adopt best practices such as using a cloud management platform or tool to orchestrate, automate, and optimize cloud environments and workloads. Don't underestimate the level of business and colleague change that is required to adopt any of the technologies or programmes of work above. The technical work can be pretty straightforward. everyone works to Well Architected , etc frameworks these days. But changing peoples behaviour, or changing their application stack & gaining their approval and buy-in. That is a different matter!
