The main goal is to make sure that your article is not just getting published, but they are getting published in journals with the right coverage and where the needed impact is made. This clearly means as an academic or professional seeking to improve, you must know exactly who you are and what need or knowledge gap you want to fill. Tailor your research to the publications that share those specific needs and feed them with the articles you want published. This way, you are getting the right attention for your work and also controlling the narrative around your professional life.

The simple answer: Know your market! As someone who has been on the other side of the desk, it should be obvious to any editors or publishers you approach that you're very familiar with their publication, their audience, and their submissions requirements and that your project is a match! Understand the process of creating a professional query letter and book proposal. Make every effort to have a name for a specific editor. These do change more often than you'd think. My go-to source for both contacts and articles to help new authors is Jeff Herman’s Guide to Book Publishers, Editors & Literary Agents.
