Choosing the right PLC for your application should always take into account the complexity of your system, the input and output conditions and the quantity it supports, as well as the communication protocols. Plc plays an important role in the industrial automation, therefore the need to consider so many factors before choosing the right Plc. Available, durability, capacity, cost and the input and output requirements must be considered before choosing Plc for any application.

Some of the main considerations would be the application needs, i.e., Is the application modular or series, is much interfacing and communication with other controllers required? Is it a one off, or is it necessary to scale it (as a standard application) up to e.g.,1000 times? level of safety required? what hardware peripherals are necessary / what communication protocol do they support? size / complexity is the application for a single controller? how many I/O are required, is it required for a large quantity of distributed I/O? Is the PLC required to interface with schedulers, SCADA or network applications / databases? How important is data retention or scan cycle time?
