Setting clear goals should be done after a period of time. First, you'll need to listen and learn from your new team members and other stakeholders about what they need from you in this role. What would help them to thrive? After this listening period, You can start setting clear goals with the information you have.

Celebrating your team, from a proud smile to an end of the year celebration, and everything in between, is important. People crave positivity (not the toxic kind) but true, meaningful compliments. I think the word meaningful is key here. And a dose of fun always helps! Be creative! ‘Catch them’ doing something awesome and point it out, encourage your team to write down accomplishments or accomplishments of others and spend time once a week/month reading them to the team. Take selfies at pivotal moments and post, mention your team in newsletters, articles, etc., encourage everyone to bring snacks to share or play in a quick game, if that’s their thing. There are so many ways you can build your team and never too late to start!

In all the roles I have taken up till date at work, the single commonality has been the excitement combined with nervousness. This never changes. However, what has determined the smooth integration (or the lack of it) has been the team leaders personality. The roles wherein the manager demonstrated positivity and encouragement were the ones which came jam packed with learning and optimism. This leads me to believe that if a leader shows belief in a new members ability and showcases herself/himself as guide versus an authoritarian boss, it helps newbies gain confidence in themselves much sooner and heightens the level of camaraderie too.
