How can you build your skills in building information modeling (BIM)?

Throughout twelve years, I've realized how important it is to know how to apply construction systems for buildings. Apart from software skills, I would recommend tapping into the construction world and learning how materials work in reality. In my first years of learning BIM, I was at the construction site learning from the builders. That helped me understand how to use the methodology and get the most out of the software. Many times, people confuse BIM with 3D software. While BIM relies on software to achieve the final product, architects should realize the importance of getting solid construction knowledge and project management skills before diving into the BIM world. I recommend staying more in the job site than the office.

I would very much agree with that fundamentals are key. But mostly of the fundamentals I would say that first and foremost that understanding the principles and concepts is key.

Once you have taken time read and digest all the information in the I.S.?EN ISO 19650 series, so you understand the principles of real BIM... then I would recommend all relevant professionals (not just designers... commercial, PMs, H&S, etc) avail of the BRE BIM Level 2 training options. And for those who will be more heavily involved in BIM "in action", there are great post-grad BIM courses in ATU (amongst others in Ireland).

Most software providers and resellers offer short courses and webinars showcasing new features. Attending these will speed up your ability to implement the new features and improve your BIM workflow. With online courses available, looking at the methods used by colleagues in a different country will give you new insights.

Try to think outside of the box. We easily go into a routine. It feels comfortable. Challenge yourself by trying out new things, and breaking the "rules", at least on a thought level. BIM is all about saving time and providing value so try to think about your processes and how new BIM solutions can improve them in either a timesaving, or value adding way.

Think of BIM as a philosophy not software or linear process, how to transfer the design from the designer head to every stakeholders vision, creating a data container that serves everyone from the pre design phase to the project maintenance phase
