First, know your mission and vision CLEARLY. Second, find out a small team of honest and hardworking people and let them know your mission and vision. Third, now give your best efforts being ruthlessly focused.

That's what I have been doing in Canada: running a small business with a highly skilled and motivated team who share the same vision. Therefore, it's essential to identify like-minded individuals with the proper skillset and delegate tasks to them as much as possible.

It is critical for small businesses to get clear on values, values statements, vision, mission, and story. When they do this it attracts more and better talent, as well as clients. It also serves as a competitive edge against direct competitors and the general market...allowing you to outperform both by 5:1 and 16:1 respectively, according to Jim Collins. Like minded people is the key, and then cultivate a shared vision and values that unify the team's purpose, foster open communication, trust, and collaboration among members, and invest in continuous learning, recognize achievements, and adapt to challenges together.

While it is important to have key people with complimentary skills, hiring the right team member which is aligned with the purpose of the company is very important. When you want to move at a fast pace, any team friction can pull down growth. While hiring key people, we engage in multiple conversations to check cultural alignment, compatibility with the team and alignment with our purpose. This is important for both the company and the individual, as we must enjoy working with each other, which will enable us to deliver extraordinary results.

Building the right team is one of the key attributes for scaling the business. One important thing in building the team is to delegate authority and having a good governance to monitor the performance of the team. A good governance will let the team members be creative as well as focused on the goals. It is not just what we achieve it also matters how we achieve the goals. The business team should align to the company culture and live by the values of the company. As you build the team focus on culture and governance.

The true strength in a small business team begins with the strength of the people within the teams; just as we build a strong organisation by starting with the strength of the individuals. The strength of the team similarly hinges on the strength of the leader or leaders. Great leaders must be first great at leading themselves, which then flows throughout the team and organisation. That leader must find that balance between providing enough leadership but also in making sure the right people are in the team, providing an environment where people feel courageous enough to make brave decisions and supported if they don't. The final piece in the puzzle is meaning - the team must have a meaningful purpose that unites and strengthens all.

Team building is a process of attaining a certain level of cohesiveness. This can be accomplished by understanding each team members Mode of operation and align them on the team, with the right role and responsibilities. One of the major components is understanding how each team member takes action. It’s a simplistic but yet semi complicated approach.

This one is a good idea. I found a simple but specific Team Member Guide (4 page manual) with company values, FAQ and other training material was a huge improvement. It took a while to find time to write it up and make it professional, but it was worth it. I would read it with them on their first day to make sure they went through it and could ask any questions they may have. I wouldn’t be surprised if their copy of the manual ended up at the bottom of their locker, but it set the right tone for them to incorporate in a team and company that had clear and disclosed values and goals.

Conduct regular reviews and provide constructive feedback when necessary. Reward to boost morality. Processes sometimes need to be adjusted so always encourage open dialog.

In my experience I find this step in building the best team is often missed or taken for granted. Chances are there’s a team dynamic that doesn’t get the attention it deserves because as the team learns their new role or there’s a shift towards a changing process, the focus will also change. That doesn’t mean everyone on the team understands how they fit in, or how they can contribute to growth. Emphasize personal development; recognize each team member brings their own individual talents. Establish clear and defined roles. Empower the team to own the outcome without fear. Be open for new or changing perspectives. Listen to what your team is saying or not saying. We all get better at what we practice.

Two things that I find helpful in communication your vision and keeping the team aligned is to: 1) Become obsessed with the vision, if you think you've mentioned your vision enough, think again, do not let an opportunity slip by where you can further elaborate on the companies vision and mission and you don't. 2) Ask your employees, what is something I should be looking so we "both" know that we are on the right track and we can identify challenges before they become issues? employees are empowered by the autonomy and will come up with commitments by themselves that will (surprisingly) not be compromised.

Team dynamics is a two way process. Transparency is the key that unlocks hitherto unimaginable opportunities. Role clarity defines the path for every individual in the team.

It is also important to think through the channels and processes of communication for expectations, goals, feedback etc. As a small business owner you can easily be deluded by the size and ease of communication for a small team. But as the team grows communication can get lost without well thought out communication and feedback processes and channels.

Transparency and mutual respect are #1. We promote open communication channels, from interns to senior leadership. Everyone feels heard. Structured and informal feedback sessions create an environment where ideas flourish, and challenges are addressed promptly. It's about learning from one another. We foster a culture where team members are encouraged to share their knowledge, insights, and even their failures. We also invest in team-building activities in and out of the office that deepen interpersonal relationships, ensuring that collaboration is not just task-driven but genuinely relationship-driven. Ultimately, building a strong team is not just about the 'what' we do but very much about the 'how' and 'why' we do it together.

Within the entire “symphony” of an organization, an evidenced growth in the commitment to a high collaborative quotient(CQ) is a critical Pillar if sustainable growth is your goal. Your CQ should be visible in terms of the behavior of highest level of leadership in that they are open to ideas and solutions from any/all appropriate sources that support accelerated and effective decision making or course correction. A high CQ is evident in companies whose leadership exhibits what is called “confident humility”.

Contrary to what most larger organizations think, I believe the best reward you can give to your employees (that money cannot buy) is recognition and meaning. As Ken Blanchard phrases it in his book The One Minute Manager "catch them do something right" when you focus on what your employee does right and praise them for it, this shows them that what they do matters, that they are on the right track and that their contribution is being recognized. Another way to reward with meaning (that money cannot buy) is to share with your team feedback you receive from clients, whether they thank one employee or the team overall, sharing the results helps everyone attune to what it means to work within your organization and what the results look like.

What I've found as a powerful reward is rest. We need to recognize the effort our teams put in and reward them with time off (without disturbance). Rewarding someone who gets more done in a shorter amount of time needs recognition for their efforts and efficiency, not more work to fill the amount of time we think they're supposed to spend on work.

Reward people the way they want to be rewarded. Giving money or accolades to someone who doesn't want either misses the mark. Understand your team at the individual level. Become familiar with what motivates them and then recognize and reward them accordingly. Maybe it is time. Perhaps it is a charity. It could be a promotion, a lateral move to something they have been wanting to do, or it could be a flexible schedule. Studying someone passively learn understand them plus some well-placed indirect questions can help. Do this well is an important skill and it creates and sustains individual goodwill toward leadership across a team.

Rewards always does not mean in monetary term, I belive recognising the effort is equally rather more important for retaining People.

Appreciation is essential, but not all people want the same appreciation style. Like love languages, it is vital to understand what the different appreciation styles each team member has. Otherwise you can turn a positive moment into a negative.

Your people, and their ability to not only execute a strategy, but to live the brand promise of your organization are critical to sustainable growth. Do you have a clear understanding of not only the appropriate organizational structure required to deliver on your growth goals, but the values, talent and characteristics that your business development and entire leadership and management team should exhibit? Do you measure how well they align to your values? Are you investing in their growth? A favorite quote of mine is “what if we train our best people and they leave?” The response is “what if we don’t and they stay?” Passionate, capable people who believe and live your brand promise can overcome the most average strategies.

To ensure your small business team's continuous growth: Encourage Feedback: Foster an environment where seeking and providing feedback is routine. Learn from Mistakes: Promote a culture that views mistakes as learning opportunities. Embrace Change: Encourage adaptability and openness to change. Evaluate Performance: Regularly assess team performance to identify improvement areas. Implement Solutions: Act on feedback and analysis to make necessary adjustments. This approach cultivates a culture of continuous improvement, driving innovation and excellence within your team.

Mistakes will be made. By developing a culture where mistakes are acceptable and are considered as learning moments, the positive learning curve will be exponential and costly mistakes that would otherwise be covered up can be avoided When my new house was built, the builders made one mistake after the other. Many could have been avoided, but the carpenters were instructed: Just do as you are told, even if they were aware that something should and could be done better. Fortunately, I had a good architect who made sure that all the mistakes were corrected. In the end the builder made a loss of € 150.000 on my house.

Culture is a living, breathing thing. As such it evolves. Purpose and values need to be pulsed at least annually to ensure they are current and aspirational for the business.

In the same way that parents are encouraged to teach children to allow for mistakes, it is important to build a culture that allows that mistakes are human. It also helps to reframe certain terms like 'areas of improvement' to say 'areas of opportunity' or 'opportunity for growth' or calling 'feedback' says 'meeting of the minds' so that it depicts are more collaborative and inclusive engagement. It creates better results when positive psychology terms are used versus the good old business english terms that depict negativity.

First thing one must do prior to building a small business team, is to clearly define the current business needs. Once we have a clear vision, we begin the process of defining the most important aspects of building teams, which is “People”. Based on business needs, one must select the individuals that clearly align with the current business needs. This can be accomplished via several paths. A couple below: 1. Assessments (Kolbe,Pi,Disc) etc. 2. One on one discussions 3. Attitude surveys Building teams should never be a “One size fits all” exercise. Teams are built based on each team members individual strengths. Provide each team member the ability to be “Free” to be themselves and watch your teams exceed expectations.

In my experience, it is important to listen to team members especially those who have been in the company earlier on. Let alone they may come up with bright ideas, they may help avoid pitfalls during the journey.

Small teams can do wonders in delivering exceptionally high results as it brings faster communication, low/no hierarchies thus leads to quick decision making and great results.
