Architects have an overwhelming sense of self-confidence and an aura of mystery. Their keen observations, creative ideas and solid logic enable them to drive change through sheer force of will and strength of character. Sometimes it will seem that architects are deconstructing and reconstructing every idea and system they encounter, mixing their work with a sense of perfectionism and even morality. Anyone who does not have the talent to keep up with the processes of architects, or worse, does not see the point in them, will likely lose their respect immediately and forever..

Building relationships with architects can function as a catalyst for not just their career, but your own. From a business person’s or a company’s viewpoint, think of this as any other professional relationship that grows and matures over time. Famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright for example, started moonlighting as a young architect and designed smaller residences for businessmen, before retaining a repeating relationship that saw larger commercial projects being designed and built. As Art Gensler also said, these relationships are like a rubberband - if you pull too hard with a jerk on either ends, it will snap. Thus, mutual patience is critical as one goes on to expand such relationships, one design at a time.

If you hire or employ an Architect, or any design professional for that matter, understand why you have made that investment and clearly communicate your basis for the commission. After doing this then let THEM do their job. Do not try and do their job for them. If you want to undertake the design process then you probably shouldn’t have hired or employed them in the first place!

Building relationships with Architects will be like building relationships with anyone - they are human after all ;-) look at what they want and why they want it, explore what they are passionate about and what they are proud of, comment on this authentically and talk about the same for you - find areas of commonality and difference which prove that there is a great enough overlap for a relationship to start and then - like a building - keep building foundations until you are ready to build an arch between your two enterprises.
