How can you build a strong network in Emergency Management as a newcomer?

Seeking a mentor in the emergency management (EM) field can be invaluable. Their guidance on industry nuances and introductions to key players at conferences and meetings can accelerate your learning and networking. My experience transitioning from the A/E/C industry to EM in 2018 illustrates this well. I found a mentor with two decades of experience at FEMA, whose insights were crucial for my understanding of EM, greatly aiding in my marketing and communications role. EM professionals often show a willingness to help newcomers, driven by a shared goal of aiding communities in times of disaster.

A great way to engage is to attend professional meetings and conferences. These could be events organized in your jurisdiction, or larger geographic areas such as your state. At the national level the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA) and International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) host annual conferences and IAEM even offers a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) certification. Engaging with professionals at these meetings and conferences will surely help expand your rolodex in the emergency management community.

A great way to build a network is to volunteer your time; just make sure you keep it manageable and put quality over quantity. One of the best volunteer opportunities I've found is to do volunteer work during the IAEM conference. I've met a lot of EMs this way, because it shifts the dynamic; they approach YOU to ask you questions about the conference, which often leads to other conversations. Social media is an excellent place to keep apprised of what other professionals are doing in their field. Many professionals pose questions to their colleagues and seek input on their work. This is an opportunity to interact. Social media can also be a beneficial resource for finding upcoming events and training opportunities.

Don't try to be someone or something that you are not. Everybody was once new in their field. Be honest when you don't know the answer to a question. Many professionals appreciate the honesty and are happy to provide you an opportunity to learn and enhance your skills. Don't be afraid to speak up!
