How can you build a strong foundation in robotics?

Robotics is a broad field, and a good starting point will depend on what interests you the most - mechanics, electronics, computer vision and ML. In my experience, a few topics are common across all pathways to robotics - programming ( python/c++) and linear algebra (transformations, solving Ax = B), basics of control systems, basics of electronics ( how do sensors work, how to make circuits), and fundamental physics of motion. When you go further deep into a particular field, you might encounter dynamic programming, calculus etc but it will all depend on the path you take.

Observation that physical interactions have uncertainty is very important for a roboticist. Just take a ball, drop it from the same height on the same spot several times. Observe that no trial is the same. Now do the math. Derive the ball bouncing equations from conservation of energy principle, and the principle of conservation of momentum in collisions combined with restitution. Do the simulation and approximate parameters to explain your experimental observations. See the gaps. Now imagine you can add an accelerometer on the ball and somehow design an actuator to control the post-collision speed of the ball at each collision. What kind of knowledge gaps do you have to implement a controller? Your robotics journey can start right here.

I started off my robotics journey with a Mechatronics Engineering degree, learning the basics of embedded systems, mechanics and electronics. What really clicked for me was diving into Python and C++ coding. It made the theoretical stuff real and relatable. And then there are many platforms to start building with like Arduinos (a Microcontroller based development board) – working with them was like connecting the dots between hardware and software in a practical way. It's not about being an expert; it's more like figuring things out as you go, finding the balance between what you know and what you're curious to explore further.

Building strong fundamentals of Linear Algebra, Calculus, Fourier Transform and Laplace Transform is critical for the foundation of Mathematical Modeling of physical systems and Control theory.

I have been working in robotics for the past 15 years. I believe that a solid understanding of locomotion and manipulation, forward and inverse kinematics, path planning, sensors, SLAM, and Visual SLAM, as well as computer vision, is essential for robotics engineers

When choosing a robotics platform, consider factors like your project's complexity, your level of expertise, and the community support available. Arduino is excellent for beginners due to its simplicity and wide community, while Raspberry Pi offers more computational power for advanced projects. Lego Mindstorms is perfect for educational purposes, and ROS (Robot Operating System) is a robust choice for complex robotics development. Don't forget to assess your budget as well, as some platforms may be more cost-effective than others. Lastly, keep in mind that the platform you choose will significantly influence your robot's capabilities, so make a well-informed decision that aligns with your goals and aspirations in the world of robotics.

I recommend considering ROS (Robot Operating System), especially if you're just starting. It's a software-based platform that can provide a smooth entry into robotics, offering a robust foundation for your projects.

The simplest way in to the world of robotics is at the technician level. Learn 6 axis robot “arm” technology at a community college to be ready to be a robotics technician or automation technician. You can also learn multi axis systems to help you prepare for a career working with automated gantry’s, loading system and warehouse automation. Understand the Cartesian world first (3 dimensions) and understand the concept of shared “collision” spaces, where two or more robots may need to enter a shared work cell. Understand order of operation or sequence and permission/denial for each possible step in a shared work cell. Once mastered then practice yaw/pitch/roll to perform fine manipulations “about” the main axis’.

Personally I started in robotics with a basic grounding in microelectronics. Having a good mechanical aptitude also helped, as did being able to follow reference material. The world has moved on, in terms of the interaction using software systems and since the dawn of AI, but the foundations of mechatronics still hold true I would say

Chose is a right platform is important. It is like before you build a tower or complex you need the make your base very strong. Therefore choosing the right platform for robotics is highly critical bcoz it will shape all the future work and development. However this is only the Software platform and it can be the RoS or the further application for customization. This is only for those who want to work as Software Robotics Engineer.

In my experience, doing my projects will reveal lots of nuances you could never have thought which are specific to your project. You’d also see some common problems that you came across only in theory, but actually applying them to your case would give you the confidence and probably even ideas to better solutions!

Absolutely, working on projects is the ultimate learning journey in robotics. It's where theory transforms into hands-on expertise. Starting with simpler projects, like a line follower or robot arm, can be immensely rewarding, building confidence and skills. As you progress to complex endeavors such as self-driving cars or drones, the thrill of innovation and problem-solving becomes the driving force. Working on projects during my bachelor's program provided me with valuable experience, and it was undeniably enjoyable. I vividly recall the time when I built a circuit board from scratch for a line-following robot. Many of the electronic design concepts that had eluded me in the classroom became crystal clear when I applied them in a real-world context. My motivation to discover and continue working on these robotics projects was fueled by my participation in student competitions. Seeking out challenges through hackathons, competitions, and company websites is an excellent way to not only reward yourself for your hard work but also to stay highly motivated for further endeavors.

Robotics is all about finding solutions to interface between many different subjects for a goal and outcome. The best way is to understand the principles of robotics plus the integration between many subjects (from design, electronics, hardware, software programming, etc.). Be curious, interlacing all of these will give you a vast experience in the area.

Buy an Arduino or Raspberry Pi and start searching for some tutorials on various platforms like YouTube or start searching for some mechatronics project on the internet. The moment you will build your first project (no matter how small functionality it has), you would be very excited to build more such Mechatronics Projects. Slowly and passionately you would start exploring the world of various sensors, actuators and other electronics components. This will motivate you to start with some complex projects involving IoT. Now is the time when you can start building a robot for some very basic requirements and now follow the same trend - start with simple outputs and gradually start developing complex mechanisms. Keep your curiosity alive!!

So many people carried away by word robot. 1- Since robotics body is not regularize so every body prospective different 2- Local event will give you prospective 3- documentaries about finding is good to have.

Joining a maker space community for learning robotics provides access to resources, learning opportunities, collaboration, and accountability. These benefits, coupled with the support and encouragement of a like-minded community, keep individuals motivated and committed. In my personal experience, the continued accountability and group participation in a maker space were instrumental in maintaining my interest and eventually propelling me to a successful career in robotics. The community's collective passion and shared experiences were pivotal in keeping the fire of interest alive.

The world has become a global village and we have different communities and so we too have Robotics Community as well. One must join some robotics community where the members are treated as family member. In the community many experts share their experiences, problems, solutions, support and opportunity. Therefore joining a robotics company would help one to grow more in the near future.

Learning is a never ending process. Unless we learn in life then we cannot implement in our life. One must learn from different resources and in today world there are many channels that can be used to learn from. Even there are many free seminars on robotics one can join and attend it to learn more about robotics from expert speech.

I would add that it’s important to have fun AND connect with others who are equally invested in following this passion. Robotics is cross-functional and can get messy when it comes to integrating the different pieces together. Building skills that help you become a better collaborator, communicator and friend are super important in being able to shape this field now and into the future.

Learn basics: Math, physics, computer science. Study robotics theory: Kinematics, dynamics, control. Practice programming: Python, C++, ROS. Build robots, experiment with sensors. Specialize: Choose an area of interest. Stay updated, network. Develop problem-solving skills.

This is by far the most underrated learning tip when it comes to robotics. Building a robot and not having fun in the process slows down the learning. Not only is it rewarding to see a fully functional robot as an end product, it is equally rewarding to get to that stage through numerous interim steps, some including partial failures that are in fact great learning opportunities. Not every burnt sensor or sleepless night is a waste but a learning opportunity when building your own robot.

Robotics is fun if you are passinate deal every failure as stepping stone to success. Just belive if your failing that means that means you should not use that technique to resolve that issue, make this a habbit as robotics engineer should deal with lot of failures than success rates in his projects.

This should be the first point. If you are not even remotely attracted to futuristic wonders, the journey will be boring (and long, very long...).

Some ways to get started are: 1-Start to study robotics fundamentals (DH table, Forward Kinematics, Inverse Kinematics, Path planning and Trajectory planning) 2-Build good programming skills in C,C++ and python. 3-Start to work on small and simple projects using ROS and Matlab
