To build a strong brand, define your niche. Pinpoint your target audience, unique selling proposition, and differentiation from the competition. Your niche should resonate with a specific group but be flexible. Position yourself as an expert, communicate your value effectively, and attract the right clients. It's like a beacon that guides the right people to your door.

A common designer's instinct is not to niche because they think they will lose more customers than they will gain by ignoring all other industries. Niching also depends on the size of the market in which the designer operates. In smaller countries with smaller markets and lower budgets, it's harder to find a niche, unfortunately. But the general principle is - niche is better, because the better you are at creating a product for one particular thing, the more credibility you create in the eyes of other similar customers.

Go into a bookstore. Which section do you gravitate to? Thats your niche. Now obsesses about it and present it to clients like its meant for just the person reading it and not a wider audience, get personal, get passionate, the rest will follow

If you know your target audience you are one step ahead. The more specific your niche, the easier to convey your message. There is no such thing as catering for everybody. Less is more without a doubt! I have learned one thing or two in a quarter of a century of experience and I venture to say that it is way more effective to target a niche of fewer people than to shoot arrows indiscriminately in a pool of millions that are not looking for what I offer. Thus far it has proven more effective than trying to reach everyone because when I get an inquiry it instantly transforms into an estimate and a job.

Creating a strong and cohesive portfolio is incredibly important in getting a client's attention. One piece of advice I have received in creating a portfolio is to put your strongest work first and your next strongest piece last. These tend to be the most memorable in the client's mind.

Mutual work is mostly based on trust. Therefore, the most frequent customers will be close people, friends and friends of friends. Referrals are the main way to find a job, so warm leads should be sought out and quality communication with them should be taken care of.

Talk to people. Show up where they are. Online. In person. Ask questions. Listen to what they are saying. What are their biggest challenges right now? Look for connection. What do you have in common? What will help create a bond that builds authentic relationship and trust? Don't be transactional in your interactions. Look for ways to help without guarantee of return. People naturally want to reciprocate, so remove any expectation and let it happen naturally. Your portfolio should be like a well-organized sock drawer cohesive, visually appealing, and without any odd socks (unless it's intentional). There was this freelancer who branded themselves as the "Pixel Picasso." Bold move, right? But it worked! Find your quirky angle and run with it you might just become the Salvador Dali of graphic freelancers! ???

Do what you say you're going to do. Basic, but many freelancers don't do it. Ask a client what their biggest frustration is working with creative freelancers and it'll be up there. Can be related to overpromising/underdelivering, where you feel like you need to say yes to everything a client asks for, even if it's outside of your skillset/ability. How many creatives suffer from people-pleasing and get themselves stuck in this way? And then can't deliver and even go AWOL out of a place of shame and guilt. I've been there! It's also caused by underestimating what something might take to do. If you struggle with that, double the time you think it will take and start tracking how long it actually takes. Be realistic and manage expectations.

Be curious. Adopt the forever student mindset Don't take feedback as an attack on your person (guilty as charged) Stay up to date with the industry and the world as much as you can I always recommend passion, there might be other motives for getting into the business. But coming from a solopreneur, knowing how hard it is to succeed I probably wouldn't stick around if I wasn't truly passionate about design. Oh and of course don't forget to play and have fun!
