One great way to build a sense of community for expatriates in a foreign country is by bringing up the rich culture of the place where the foreigners are(new environment) and then create some activities around the culture where they can interact and appreciate their new environment more. For example there are some yearly festivals that happen in some part of the world, these can be added to the foreigners schedule in form of an excursion alongside some staff who are resident so that the foreign expatriate is integrated into the culture.

In my opinion expatriates are a unique group of employees who bring a wealth of diverse experiences and perspectives to our organizations. Working abroad is a transformative experience that offers both opportunities and challenges. As HR professionals, it's essential that we not only recognize these challenges but actively work to support expatriates in their journey. By fostering expatriate diversity and inclusion, we create an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to our collective success on the global stage.

Good cultural onboarding is key to make adaptation to a new country easier and not to be landed with cultural shock or inappropriate norm that potentially can impact on expats’ life and work. Preferably to find a strong outsourced provider, who can focus on specific examples. At work would be good to have a buddy, who can be representative of local community.

Cultural training not only helps expatriates understand the customs and norms of their host country, but it also fosters a deeper appreciation for the local culture. By providing pre-departure and on-arrival cultural training sessions, organizations can equip expatriates with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate their new environment successfully. Followed by Buddy assignment where Newcomers are paired with experienced expats/ locals to help ease transition, provide guidance, and create a support system For ongoing support, create Online Platforms (on intranet) to connect, share advice, ask questions, and build relationships, form social clubs based on common interest that can bring people together eg sports clubs, book clubs, etc Most important is - Regular Check-Ins and Feedback: Ensuring ongoing support and improvement.
