Local chapter involvement is the strategic opportunity, especially volunteering on a committee. In Minnesota, the MN Multi Housing Association has 2100+ members with almost 50% of the state’s rental housing stock represented in the Association, and almost all the corporately managed apartments. Those businesses and their teams understand the strategic value of participating in a strong trade association.

I was very skeptical to join an association, I’m not a fan of sales pitches and I wasn’t clear on the value add it was going to have on my career. I joined my local BOMA (Toronto) and decided to get involved in committees. Kicking myself as I should’ve done this sooner in my career! BOMA has opened doors and expanded my network to include Presidents, VP’s, executive staff, etc. I highly encourage you to join your local association and get involved. Get out to the events and help push yourself out of your comfort zone it will do wonders for your confidence and your career!

I joined IFMA (International Facility Management Association) and got active in it. I served in the Local Chapter organising committee in different roles. I attended Global and Regional Conferences. I also took part in global project/initiatives including reviewing the certification exams and competencies task force.

Get other PM companies together to Volunteer at the same event, Meet and Greets, start a Facebook or Twitter and invite all PM Companies you know or worked for and brain storm.

In my experience there is as much to learn from being a mentor as there is from receiving mentorship and I’d encourage everyone to consider taking on both roles. In the UK there is a charity called Agents Together that will help bring people together based on their experience, skills and requirements

Online communities offer far more than is often utilized. It is a candid view into the lives and interests of those you are inspired by. Connect with them, ask questions, seek mentorship, and further delve into organizations and clubs you see common industry influencers part of or interacting with. It is easy to get lost in a world of data on the internet, but skipping the noise and going straight for what is working for others or what your industry leaders are working on is like a skip-the-line pass to get past the noise we quickly get wrapped up in with so much data surrounding us all the time.

Industry associations and the credentials they confer are worth the investment in time and expense. Many people will tell you otherwise, and if you want to just be another person working in the field they are right. On the other hand, if you want to be among the top 2-3% of the best in the industry I’d tell you to make it happen. At the end of the day it’s networking. Being amongst like-minded and like-accomplished people is only a good thing. Don’t get comfortable. Go crush it!

Sobald man ?fter auf Event geht kennt man dann schon den ein und den anderen, und der stellt einen den n?chsten vor, ein Dominoeffekt entsteht.
