As a new team leader, you might not know exactly what support you need yet. For that reason the most important thing in my experience is to build a strong external and internal network Most of us only focus on internal, the external network can bring greater industry insight as well as help us expand our thinking beyond the organisation we are in. Internally, research all the colleague groups and when they meet. Find out where your peers go to network. Create a list of people you would like in your network and start to invite them to a coffee, virtual if necessary. The most important thing about networking 121 or in groups is to go with a curious mind, focused on being in service and knowing the support you would like when asked.

Once you have your goals, you need to identify who are the people you want to connect with and how they can help you achieve them. You can start by mapping out your existing network, such as your team members, peers, managers, clients, and other contacts you already know and trust. It can be helpful to seek our peers who are in the same situation and have recently become new team leaders. They will be eager to hear other perspectives and compare experiences, which will allow you all to benefit. You can identify new leaders through your own contacts, or ask for recommendations from more senior team members who have a wider perspective on the organization. Setting up a small network of new team leads will allow you to learn and grow in your roles together, to share best practices and build a safe space with people you can confide in who are going through the exact same thing.
